The Legacy Project ---Lessons for living from the wisest Americans
The Secrets of Communicating with Adult Children
Many of the elders had one piece of advice about getting along with one’s adult children: Don’t interfere in their lives, and wait for them to come to you for advice. But what when they do ask your opinion, what are some good ways to communicate?
Tom, 82, has warm and supportive relationships with his three middle-aged sons. He recognizes that sometimes one is called upon to give advice to adult children; indeed, they ask for it. A problem, of course, is that parents are naturally invested in their children, and it is difficult for them to step outside of their own needs to objectively evaluate the choices their child must make.
Tom’s advice: Take the 「I」 out of the conversation:
Yeah, the big advice is always be open minded. Forget the business of 『I』 centered and put the focus on 『you』 centered. The son that you’re talking to and who has issues that he wants to discuss and forget the 『I』, or at least put the I in the background so that at least he understands that he’s getting the benefit of your wisdom. You, who can govern how much 『I』 to project, can inject information or guidance when it’s appropriate, not to dominate the conversation but to augment what the son wants to say. I think it’s a delicate balance of diplomacy among family members. I』ve not always done well.
Grace, 75, found that her enjoyment of her children increased as they grew older and became adults; it was the 「pay-off」 for more difficult earlier years.
I think by the time my kids were a little bit older and they were able to accept their parents for who they were, as I was with my mother, then it was great. I have enjoyed my children as adults so much, so, so much, and it’s something no one ever said to me. They always would say when the kids were young, 「Oh, these are the wonderful years, these are the best years.」 They were lovely years, but there is something just as lovely or more lovely when they are adults and you could talk to them as another human being. To know your children as adults is great.
She shares her thoughts with her kids, but accepts that her advice may be turned aside.
Well, there again, I think – don’t be too critical. In fact, don’t be critical at all. Accept them, accept what they’re doing. But I for example just wrote my daughter giving her some financial advice, and said, 「I’m giving this to you with love not with criticism,」 because she just does such stupid things financially. So – and she will read it, and maybe she』ll do it and maybe she won’t, but I’m perfectly willing to accept it that way.

Today I happened to read an interesting article written by Professor Rao Yi at his Public WeChat Account named 饒議科學.
The studies find that fruit flies in their laboratory seemed to be conditioned by their courtship experience. When a female fruit fly mated with a male fruit fly, it tended to resist new pursuers. When the male pursuer was rejected by the female fly, it became more reluctant to court other female fruit flies. The researchers identified the mechanism as follows: In the mating process, the male fruit fly injected a special liquid into the female’s body, weakening its willingness to mate with other male fruit flies. When the female fruit fly contaminated with the special liquid rejected another male fruit fly, the latter would infer that all fruit flies would reject it, which weakened its motivation for further courtship.
The similar conspiracy seems to be common among people. Take one of the main characters in the TV series Game Changer as an example. Fang Li was one of Professor Zhou’s talented students. When he courted Zhou’s daughter Zhou Xue, Professor Zhou saw through him. Professor Zhou accused Fang of being double-faced, unscrupulous, and greedy虛偽、投機、惦記別人的東西. However, it was too late. As a con artist, Fang pretended to be a good husband and good father in front of Zhou Xue for over ten years although he kept his assistant as a secret lover. Zhou Xue had become a professional housewife since she got married. She was caged in her home and caged in her exclusive contact with her camouflaged 「perfect Mr. Right.」
What is the way out for people stuck in the sweet trap? Being aware that courtship can be conditioned and being independent with team support may be helpful.

Extended Reading
Liar's Poker (Norton Paperback) Paperback – March 15, 2010
The time was the 1980s. The place was Wall Street. The game was called Liar’s Poker.
Michael Lewis was fresh out of Princeton and the London School of Economics when he landed a job at Salomon Brothers, one of Wall Street’s premier investment firms. During the next three years, Lewis rose from callow trainee to bond salesman, raking in millions for the firm and cashing in on a modern-day gold rush.
Liar’s Poker is the culmination of those heady, frenzied years—a behind-the-scenes look at a unique and turbulent time in American business. From the frat-boy camaraderie of the forty-first-floor trading room to the killer instinct that made ambitious young men gamble everything on a high-stakes game of bluffing and deception, here is Michael Lewis’s knowing and hilarious insider’s account of an unprecedented era of greed, gluttony, and outrageous fortune.

Ratings
The narrative is very fluid and I like the way the author swings between (i) the history of financial markets in 70/80’s, (ii) the rise and fall of Salomon Brothers and (iii) his own personal experiences inside the firm. The amplitude of the themes changes a lot, from broad to narrower topics, but the author manages to crisscross between them while holding the links and maintaining the flow. Besides, it is interesting to see how transparently the author shows that some prejudices people have about banks and financial markets professionals were intensely true. The book made me wonder how it may have been to live in such a unique work place and to regularly sleep and dine at places perhaps as impressive as some salaries mentioned: Le Périgord, Bristol, Tante Claire, Plaza Athenée, Claridge's, everything charged to the firm’s expense account. As the book mentions, some traders viewed the expense account as a soft-dollar compensation system.
Yes, Liar's Poker was the game back in the day. I remember a "going away" party for one of our guys who was transferring from our offices at 60 Broad Street to mid-town - we were at Michael's 2, near the Battery and had about 15-20 of us there all seated at a long table on the left side of the restaurant. A couple of us at my end of the table started playing Liar's Poker, and soon at least a dozen of us were in the game. Yes, we were somewhat obvious and probably somewhat loud - the game started to attract attention - guys from other companies siting at other tables started wandering over and tried to get in the game - at that point the management came over and asked that we stop the game for the sake of their liquor license. Everybody loved Liar's Poker.
This book catches the atmosphere of that period and points out some of the flaws in the financial system that was in place back then. Many of those same flaws still exist today.
A good read for the historical perspective, and a warning for all customers of financial services.

Mother Bunny's Storytime
『First of all, we should demonopolize the sector and develop competition to make the people receive good services at reasonable prices.』 --Oxford English Dictionary
To run an urgent errand, I tried to book a taxi from the market-dominating ride-sharing app. I waited anxiously for five minutes until some driver responded. I packed the documents and rushed out of the apartment. At the main entrance of our housing estate, I waited for three minutes and there was no sight of the taxi. I checked the location of the driver at the app. To my frustration, it indicated a waiting time of 9 more minutes before the driver arrived. At that moment, I saw a taxi with the sign 「Vacant」 passing by. I waved my hand and got into it. Then I tried to cancel the taxi that I had booked from the app, but it demanded a fine of 2 Yuan. It was unfair that the driver responded when he was not available instantly. I suspect that some ill-intended drivers would not hesitate to take advantage of this rule. Not surprisingly, there seemed to be no place to file a complaint against such unfairness.
Since then the requirement to pay the fine popped up each time I tried to book a taxi at the app again. The nationwide monopoly of the app almost took away my right to book a taxi, if not to take a taxi at all, tremendously causing inconvenience to my life. As soon as I heard about a new ride-sharing app named 申程出行, I went ahead and booked a taxi from it.
A driver responded instantly. I rushed to the entrance and found the taxi waiting there. The driver honestly told me that he was not very familiar with the neighborhood. I instructed him explicitly on how to get to Guonian Road. The inside of the taxi looked clean and new. Upon my arrival, the driver sent me the direction to pay the fare at the app. I told him that I could pay later when I got off the taxi. He was a little unsure about that and insisted on my paying in the car before handing me the receipt. I guess that most VIP drivers prefer Didi for favorite policies towards them while申程出行was a new app and could only attract new drivers in the early stage. But I believe that we need to support competitors of a monopolized business when they are young and fragile so that there will be hope to demonopolize the industry.

A friend shared her experience of getting vaccinated, from which I learn how having faith in people and in yourself can impact your decisions.
In middle-December of 2020, my friend received a notice about registering for the vaccination. She talked with some close associates about their intentions, but few of them were willing to get vaccinated. They all read from some WeChat public account about a sensational story, that is, a doctor got paralyzed after taking vaccine shots. It seems that one sensational tabloid story can offset the persuasiveness of one hundred official reports which proved the vaccine’s safety. It sounds like a paradox: people who are more paranoid about their safety refused to take vaccine shots that are produced to protect their safety.
Anyhow, my friend read the potential side effects of the vaccine and went ahead and signed in. She waited for two weeks until she was notified to get ready for the shot. She arrived at the designated place, where the bus was parking. There were about thirty people on the bus, most of whom were her colleagues. After filling in the forms and registering online, everyone was equipped with a QR health code and an ID card. They were sent to a stadium, where the vaccination would be operated. They filed into the building and showed the volunteers their QR health code. Each of them was inquired by a doctor whether they suffered from symptoms like coughing, fever, and other acute illnesses and taking antibody drugs in the past three days. My friend assumed that they were merely going through a motion. Later, she heard that a colleague was rejected because she had a sore throat and had caught a cold.
She was allocated to Area A, where individual tents were standing. She lifted up the curtain and went inside. A clean-cut young-looking nurse or doctor was waiting there. She instructed my friend to bare her left arm and expose her deltoid muscle clearly and patiently.
The shot was bearably hurting. My friend asked whether it was normal to feel hurt. The nurse replied kindly: The vaccine was just taken out of the refrigerator, so the injection felt more uncomfortable. She also suggested that my friend not take a shower in two or three days. When asked when the vaccine can take effect to protect her against infection, the nurse quoted the Academician Zhong Nanshan 「It may take as long as a month for the immune system to react.」
Then my friend was ushered into the Observation Area. She waited for thirty minutes with other colleagues and returned to the bus on time. On the way back, the nervousness was gone and everyone was relaxed.
After fourteen days, my friend was notified to take the second shot to reinforce the immune effect. Again, on the bus to the stadium, the atmosphere became a little tense when someone said that the side effects of taking the second shot would be more severe compared to those of the first shot. 「Nonsense,」 a colleague sitting opposite to her responded: 「I know several doctor friends who have completed the vaccination. There are no obvious side effects from either the first shot or the second shot.」 The relaxing atmosphere suddenly resumed on the bus. Everything was pretty much the same except the nurse. This one was wearing double artificial eyelashes. Besides, she kept her fingernails irregularly long. My friend became a little upset until the nurse sanitized her deltoid muscle and completed the injection. This time the injection did not hurt at all. My friend suddenly changed her impression of the nurse. She repeated the question about whether she can take a shower and how long it would take for the immune system to react. Not surprisingly, the nurse replied that one day would be enough for not taking a shower and how long it would take for your immune system to react depends on your health status.
My friend felt reassured and went home. The nurse was right. She felt no side effects but a little pinch in the deltoid muscle. She will not hesitate to tell her friends: Go ahead if you have a chance to take a shot.

As an old saying goes, after Laba, it's the Chinese New Year.
What is the Laba Festival?
Laba Festival, also simply called "Laba," comes on the eighth day of the twelfth month of the Chinese lunar year. The festival has this name because the twelfth month is also called "la" month in Chinese while the number eight is pronounced "ba."
Since it's in the last month of the lunar year, the festival implies saying goodbye to the old and embracing the new, and often regarded as a warm-up celebration for the upcoming Spring Festival.
Laba Day is also Bodhi Day in the Buddhist tradition. It's said that Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, attained enlightenment on this day. Thus, the day is one of the grandest festivals for Buddhists.
What do we do on this day?
One of the festival's traditions is to offer sacrifice for the ancestors and gods. In ancient times of agrarian societies, this worship was a prayer for good luck and a bountiful harvest.
It was also an important ritual for emperors in those times to hold grand sacrificial fetes in the winter to show their appreciation to nature and their ancestors.
Those ancient activities could be interpreted as a reflection of "Xiao" (filial piety), "Ren" (benevolence and love) and 「Yi」 (righteousness) in Confucian values.
What food do we eat for this fest?
The tradition to have Laba congee on this day dates back more than a thousand years and is still a major part of Laba day in many places.
Legend has it that before being enlightened, the Buddha worked hard for many years and was emaciated and weak. Thanks to the milk porridge offered by some shepherdesses, he recovered physical strength and later achieved enlightenment.
Therefore, nowadays, temples adhere to the tradition of offering congee to the public on this day to show appreciation for the kindhearted and to help the poor.
The selection of ingredients for the congee may vary geographically, but generally it include grains like rice, millet, glutinous rice, sorghum, black rice, and coix seeds; beans like soybean, red bean, mung bean, kidney bean, and cowpea; nuts like red dates, peanuts, lotus seeds, goji, chestnuts, raisins, walnuts, and longans.
In northern China, it's also popular to make Laba garlic. People usually put peeled garlic cloves into a container and pour vinegar inside before sealing it. During the pickling process, the garlic will turn green. It is a typical side dish to have together with dumplings during the Spring Festival.
In northwest China, some residents in Shaanxi Province eat Laba noodles for the festival. People in Qinghai Province and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region prefer rice made with beans or meat. In places like Anhui in east China, people will eat Laba tofu.
These local customs vary based on geography and climate as they help people to overcome the winter cold and prevent illness.

Mother Bunny's Storytime
「You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.」 — Steve Jobs
I firmly believe in affinity, my good luck of meeting soul friends along my life journey, who are my saviors in difficult challenges. Still, I am not different from millions of other ordinary Chinese parents.
Chinese parents seem to be genetically conditioned by Confucianism. On the one hand, they may be blessed with the willingness to offer unconditional love for their family and friends because Master says: 「Charity begins at home」 (百善孝為先)and 「Care for other’s elderly and children as one’s own」 (老吾老以及人之老,幼吾幼以及人之幼) On the other hand, they suffer from being self-righteousness and are accused of being manipulating their child’s life.
Such a dilemma exhibits itself from Day One when the baby was born. As caretakers, they make all decisions for their children in the name of 「I am doing that for your good.」 They mobilize all resources and spare no effort to get their kid in the best kindergarten, the best primary school, the best high school, the best college, and the best company. Each time they sacrifice their own life quality, they tell themselves proudly: I’m doing this for the sake of my child. Each time they forgive themselves for devastating their child’s morale or depriving their child of what he likes to do, they reassure themselves: I’m doing this to do you good.
This fallacy has been consequential. A gifted child becomes a mediocre programmer. A high-income child is incapable of building a family. A PhD. student can hardly fend for himself…
What is the crux of the millennium problem? Life changes. People change. There is no once-and-for-all pathway to happiness or success. There is no all-purpose remedy for constantly changing circumstances.
What works the most efficiently is parents』 trust and support of the child. The child is in the best position to judge and decide what to do and how to cooperate with all other team members. Quit making decisions for your child. Be a loyal listener.
