Hey! Hey! Hey! 我是RJ高曉龍,歡迎來到今天的「快趣學英語」。
The topic says it all. 「Welcome to」 is Chinglish. It’s Chinglish because it comes from the Chinese 」 歡迎「。In Chinese, you can say 「歡迎過來我的飯店喝茶」or 「歡迎來我的飯店參觀」. If you directly translate each word, you have 「Welcome to come to my restaurant (+verb).」 And that’s why it’s a mistake…
這個主題說明了一切。「Welcome to」 是中式英語。說它是中式英語是因為它來自中文的「歡迎」。在中文裡你說「歡迎過來我的飯店喝茶」, 或者「歡迎來我的飯店參觀」。假如你直譯每個詞,就是 「Welcome to come to my restaurant (+動詞).」 。這就是為什麼它是錯的。
Add a Subject
- 添加一個主語 -
But we can’t translate each word. Real English starts with a subject. Where is it? The subject is the key to saying it right. If we just put in a subject (who do you welcome) and "be" verb, our sentence would be correct. Also, if the verb is very obvious and not necessary, you don’t have to say it (the verb).
我們不能直譯每一個詞。真正英語開頭需要一個主語。這個主語就是正確表達的關鍵。假如我們放一個主語(你歡迎誰)和一個"be"動詞,我們的句子就對了。還有,假如這個動詞非常明顯和沒必要的,你就不用說這個動詞。
Examples:
「You are welcome to come to our restaurant」
歡迎你光臨我們的餐廳
「You are welcome to our restaurant」
歡迎你光臨我們的餐廳
Add a Subject & Object
- 添加一個主語和賓語 -
The subject can also be yourself, or the person doing the welcoming. Then whoever you are talking to would be the object. Again, if the verb is really obvious, you don’t have to say it.
這個主語可以是你自己,或者是你歡迎的人。無論你和誰交談,那個人就是賓語。再說一次,假如動詞很明顯的,你不需要說這個動詞。
Examples:
「We welcome you to come to our restaurant」
歡迎您光臨我們的餐廳
「We welcome you to our restaurant」
歡迎您光臨我們的餐廳
We welcome you to join our team building activity.
我們歡迎你加入我們的團建活動。
You’re welcome to visit us when you have time.

When you're ALREADY there
- 你已經到了 -
There's one exception to the rules above. When you are ALREADY at the place. When you arrive at a place, it's very common for the staff to greet someone by saying "Welcome to [place]". But here, you CANNOT use a verb! Because the big difference is, you are not 'inviting' someone to 'do' something (go, try, eat, etc). You are actually 'greeting' them, because someone has just arrived.
上述規則有一個例外。當你已經到了某個地方,而且是剛到那兒的時候,員工通常會說「歡迎來到[地方]」,對於問候別人來說這麼做是普遍的。但是在這裡,你不能用動詞!因為最大的區別是,你不是在邀請某人做某事(去,嘗試,吃,等等)。你實際上是在「問候」他們,因為有人剛到。
(you just arrived to the city)
(arrived at a hotel)
OK, my friends are welcoming me to their new bar for a drink, so I’m gonna go. Remember that you are always welcome to visit me if you’re in my neighborhood. I will welcome anybody… as long as they buy me a drink first, haha. That’s it for now, until next article, cya!~
我的朋友歡迎我去他們的新酒吧喝一杯,所以我要過去了。記住如果你在我家附近的,隨時歡迎來我家做客。我歡迎任何人...只要他們先給我買杯喝的,哈哈。就這樣了,下期見咯,拜拜!~
順便說下,如果你真的想擁有一腔完美的美式口音,我建議你跟我來一場真正的口音的碰撞。我花了一年的時間打造了個全新的課程,找到用最簡單的方法練習最完美的口音。期待你的到來哦~
