英文習語是英語詞彙學習必不可少的一環,大部分的英文習語都有隱喻意義,帶有深厚的文化底蘊色彩。在日常寫作或是口語中用這些習語,不僅能使我們的表達更加生動形象,也能更簡潔有力。

a dime a dozen英:Very common and of no particular value.中:很常見,沒有什麼價值的Ex: Experts in this field are a dime a dozen.
add insult to injury英:to act in a way that makes a bad or displeasing situation worse.
中:insult是「侮辱」的意思,這裡作名詞['nslt]。injury,受傷。 Add insult to injury從字面上看,是受了傷之後還受到侮辱。可意譯為中文的「雪上加霜」「落井下石」。
Ex: We started off late. To add insult to injury, our car broke down on the way.
all ears英:Listening intently, fully focused or awaiting an explanation.
中:全神貫注的聽,或等著一個解釋。相當於中文的「洗耳恭聽」。
Ex: Tell me what I missed. I’m all ears!
barking up the wrong tree英:Looking in the wrong place. Accusing the wrong person.
中:字面意思是「朝著一棵錯的樹吠叫」,引申為描述一個人在尋找一件事的緣由時,找錯了原因,攻擊錯了對象。
Ex: If you think I have enough spare cash to pay for your holiday, then you're barking up the wrong tree.
beat around/about the bush英:Avoiding the main issue. Not speaking directly about a topic.
中:beat是「拍打」,bush是「灌木叢」,around 和 about 都是「四周」的意思。據說從前英國貴族打獵時,會先派人進樹林,用樹枝敲打樹,好讓鳥類或小動物因受驚嚇而跑出。後來 beataroundthebush 演變成「拐彎抹角」、「旁敲側擊」等意。

bed of roses英:an easy, comfortable situation, on easy life.
中:字面意思為玫瑰花床,引申意為:安樂窩;稱心如意的處境
Ex: Making money is not a bed of roses, so wake up early and go to work.
The life of the royal family is a bed of roses in United Kingdom of Great Britain.
best of both worlds英:to get all the advantages of two things at the same time.
中:"兩個世界中最好的",也就是我們常說的"兩全其美,各取其長"
Ex: Our hotel is by the beach and just a short train ride away from the city, so we get the best of both worlds.
bite off more than you can chew英:to take an a taks that is way too big.
bite指「咬,叮」,bite off意為「咬下」;chew為「爵」的意思。該習語的字面意思為「咬下的比所能爵的還多」,比喻「貪多爵不爛」。
Ex: Nathan was already working two jobs. Now he’s taken a third. He’s definitely bitten off more than he can chew
