今年是農曆鼠年，在英語裡一般用the Year of the Rat來表示，當然用the Year of the Mouse來表示也沒錯。

不知道是不是因為米老鼠的形象太深入人心，大部分人看到mouse這個詞就會覺得是可愛的，惹人喜愛的形象，而看到rat這個詞就會想到「一隻老鼠壞了一鍋湯」之類的負面形象。
從體型上來說，rat的體型比mouse稍大，一般有鴿子那麼大，而mouse的體型較小，跟麻雀差不多。
Rat多生活在室外，最常見的有褐鼠（brown rat）、黑老鼠（black rat），還有田鼠（field rat）、大足鼠（Himalayan field rat）等，一般破壞性較強，且會引發並傳播鼠疫（bubonic plague）。
Mouse則多指家鼠（house mouse），一般藏在家中偷吃食物，如今也有人將mouse當作寵物來養。
值得注意的是，rat的複數形式是rats，而mouse的複數形式是mice，可不要搞錯了呀。

rat race 激烈的競爭；殘酷、高壓的生存環境

lab rat （實驗室裡的）小白鼠；長期泡在實驗室的研究生；實驗對象
He is in love with a lab rat and they haven't seen each other for three months.他愛上了一個實驗室狂魔，他們已經3個月沒見面了。
Not all the human lab rats in this study fully understood the potential consequences.並不是所有的人類實驗對象都完全了解這個實驗可能導致的後果。
rat's nest 一團亂麻；亂作一團；亂得像豬窩
We just moved in, and the place is a rat's nest.我們剛搬進去，這地方簡直是個豬窩。

mouse potato 電腦狂人（長時間使用電腦的人）
I can't believe I spend 10 hours a day on the internet. I'm such a mouse potato!真不敢相信我一天在網上的時間有10個小時，我真是個電腦狂人！
poor as a church mouse 窮得叮噹響；一貧如洗
You want to borrow money from him? He is as poor as a church mouse.你想從他那裡借錢？他可是一貧如洗。
quiet as a mouse 悄無聲息；沉默寡言
She was as quiet as a mouse that nobody noticed her presence. 她不聲不響，以至於沒人意識到她也在場。
play cat and mouse 玩貓捉老鼠
Stop playing cat and mouse with me and tell me what you really want.別跟我玩貓捉老鼠了，直接告訴我你想要什麼。
Mickey Mouse 業餘的；小兒科的；毫無價值的
His Mickey Mouse assignments soon bored the students.學生們很快就對他那些小兒科的作業生厭了。
