美語簡單，只用in THE future（很少人用in future）, 就如同in the hospital一樣總是用定冠詞(英式英語用 in hospital；不過，這仍是比較奇怪的現象，因為總體上，美式英語要比英式英語簡約）。
故而只有英式英語既用in future,又用 in the future，所以the有無的差異只是針對英式英語的。
在英式英語中，in future與in the future的差異可以用下圖表示
所以 in future是「從現在以後，從今以後」，而in the future側重「未來某個時刻，或從未來某時刻開始」，如
【例句1】In future, don't take my things without my permission. (從此以後，沒我同意，不要動我東西)
【例句2】I want to be a pilot in the future. (未來我會成為飛行員--不是過了當前這個時刻之後，而是可能過了三年、五年)。
下面這兩個句子的語義就不大通
【例句3*】In the future, don't take my things without my permission. (這個就不大說得通)
【例句4*】 want to be a pilot in future.(這個說不通)
再比如
【例句5】Human beings will live on the Moon in the future.(人類會在未來某個時刻到月球上生活)
【例句6*】Human beings will live on the Moon in future. (從現在起，人類就會到到月球上生活--語義有問題)
也有都能說得通的場景，但語義稍有差異，如
【例句7】I will help you in future（從今以後，我就會幫你)
【例句8】I will help you in the future (未來我會幫你(隱含將來某個時候)
"從今以後就"有點紀律要求的語境，而「未來某個時刻」有點預測陳述的語境，所以也有從這個角度區分二者語義的，如
【例句9】In the future we will all be connected wirelessly into our brains" (未來無限會接入我們的大腦—未來預測)
【例句10】In the future we plan to make significant investments in Romania and Bulgaria.（我們計劃未來在羅馬尼亞和保加利亞要進行重大投資—在某個時間節點之後開始）
【例句11】The boy wants to become a philosopher in the future(那個男孩想在未來某時刻成為哲學家)
【例句12】We learn from the past, experience th epresent and hope for success in the future（.我們從過去中學習,體驗現在,展望未來的成功）
【例句12】You should be more careful in future.(以後你應該更小心—從現在開始都要小心)
【例句13】Be more careful with your spelling in future（今後要要注意你的拼寫)
【例句14】Such a bad habit must be got rid of in future（今後成長鬚改掉這樣的壞習慣）
【例句15】In future, make sure the door is never left unlocked（今後一定要注意把門鎖上 ）
當然future前如果還有些修飾詞，如near future, not-too-distant future,往往都是用定冠詞(這時定的程度高一些)，如
【例句16】We expect a bill on this subject to be submitted to Parliament in the near future.
【例句17】I'm looking forward to meeting you again in the not-too-distant future.
除了介詞in之外，future以普通名詞作為介詞或動詞賓語時，都是要帶定冠詞詞的(特別是在動作感強的語句中)，如
【例句18】No one knows the future.
【例句19*】No one knows future.(錯的)
【例句20】You should start thinking about the future.
【例句21*】You should start thinking about future.(錯誤)
另外in the future有個the, 說話時可刻意將the發音發的長一些，這就吸引了受話人對隨後future的注意力, 這當然就強調future，實現的效果自然是強調很久很久以後的future，如
【例句22】No one can foresee what will happen in the future（沒人能預見將來會發生什麼事）
