多年來，（For years）
美國人常常把別國看不起，（Americans often looked down on other countries, ）
因為他們似乎管不好自己。（where people seemed to be unable to govern themselves.
）
他們麻煩不斷，（These people lurched from crisis to crisis.）
他們行事幼稚，（They couldn’t behave like grown-ups.）
他們放任橫行亂來的暴徒，（They couldn’t control their mobs.）
他們喜歡無視法治的強人，（They liked strongmen who showed little regard for the rule of law.）
我們不知他們出了什麼問題。（We wondered what was wrong with them.）
他們不夠老練，頭腦簡單，真是可憐。（They were unsophisticated. Simple-minded. Poor them.）
我們以為自己不一樣，更強，超棒。（We thought we were different. Better. Even exceptional.）
可看看我們現在這副模樣。（Yet, here we are.）
