今天介紹的《Little Witch's Big Night》，是世界上最大的童書出版社美國蘭登書屋暢銷25年的經典分級閱讀：Step into reading第三階段的其中一本。
這套書共分5級，在美國暢銷近30年，是一套適合學齡前及小學階段兒童學習英語的分級「教材」。之所以稱之為教材，是因為這套書太受歡迎了，隨便進入一個小學教室，就一定有它，而眾所周知，美國小學沒有指定教材，很多老師就是用這套書來給孩子們學習的。
整套系列都是原汁原味的英語原版圖書，書中用詞地道，詞彙豐富，插畫漂亮，有助於改善孩子的英語閱讀能力。內容包羅萬象，有圖畫書、數學、經典童話故事、勵志故事和科普類等。

小女巫因為太乖了，不會惡作劇，而被女巫媽媽教訓了，今年的萬聖節，小女巫只能一個人留在家裡。這個難熬的萬聖節，可要怎麼度過呢？

It was Halloween night. All the witches were busy.
They were busy getting ready for their Halloween ride.
Grouchy Witch was busy making grouchy faces in her cracked mirror.
Nasty Witch was busy shooting a water gun at her cat, Bow-Wow.
Mother Witch was busy making a new broomstick for Little Witch.
這天是萬聖節前夜 所有女巫都很忙 她們都忙著準備自己的萬聖節坐騎
脾氣暴躁的女巫正忙著在破碎的鏡子裡做脾氣暴躁的臉
討厭的女巫正忙著用水槍對著她的貓 噼裡啪啦 女巫媽媽正忙著給小女巫做一把新掃帚
Oh, what a wonderful Halloween it was going to be!
All the witches were ready... but where was Little Witch?
「Little Witch, what are you doing?」 called Mother Witch.
Mother Witch went upstairs and into Little Witch’s room.
「What! You made your bed again!」 screeched Mother Witch.
「Sorry, Mother. I forgot,」 said Little Witch.
哦 這將是多麼美好的萬聖節啊！ 所有的女巫都準備好了…但是小女巫呢？
「小女巫，你在幹什麼？」女巫媽媽喊道 女巫媽媽上樓進了小女巫的房間
「什麼！你又整理了床鋪！」女巫媽媽尖叫著說 「對不起 媽媽 我忘了」小女巫說
Then Mother Witch looked under the bed. 「And you cleaned your cobwebs!」 Mother Witch was angry.「You really Must be punished. You will stay home tonight while we go flying,」 said Mother Witch.
「But it is Halloween!」 said Little Witch. 「Maybe this will teach you not to be so good,」 said Mother Witch.
然後女巫媽媽看了看床下 「你還清理了蜘蛛網！」女巫媽媽很生氣 「你真的該受罰了 今晚我們飛的時候你呆在家裡」女巫媽媽說
「但今天是萬聖節！」小女巫說 「給你個教訓 以後不能這麼乖了」女巫媽媽說
Little Witch watched the big witches fly off.
Oh, how she wanted to fly with them! she was very sad.
小女巫看著大女巫飛走 哦 她多麼想和他們一起飛啊！ 她很是傷心
Her bat, Scrubby, wanted to cheer her up. He made funny faces...
and he did silly tricks. 「Even my bat is good!」 cried Little Witch. 「This is the worst Halloween ever.」
她的蝙蝠Scrubby想讓她振作起來 他做了個鬼臉… 他做了一些愚蠢的把戲
「連我的蝙蝠都這麼乖！」小女巫哭喊 「這是有史以來最差勁的萬聖節了」
Suddenly -- ding, dong went the doorbell.
Little Witch ran to the door. She opened it and saw a devil, a pirate,
and an astronaut. Each had a big bag of candy. 「Trick or treat!」 they said.
突然——叮咚 門鈴響了 小女巫跑去開門
門外站著惡魔 海盜 和太空人 每人手上拿著一包糖
「不給糖就搗蛋！」他們說
「Oh, dear,」 said Little Witch. 「I have no treats for you.」
「No treats!」 said the devil. 「No treats!」 said the pirate. 「No treats!」 said the astronaut.
「But it is Halloween!」 said the three trick-or-treaters. They started to walk away. 「Wait,」 said Little Witch. 「Maybe I can give you a treat.」
「哦 親愛的」小女巫說 「我沒有糖」
「沒有糖！」魔鬼說 「沒有糖！」海盜說 「沒有糖！」太空人說
「但今天是萬聖節啊！」三個惡作劇者說 他們準備走的時候 小女巫說「等等！」
「也許我可以給你們別的東西」
「I can give you a ride on my broomstick,」 she said.
「Really?」 said the devil. 「Wow!」 said the pirate.
「Can you really fly?」 asked the astronaut.
「Just wait and see!」 said Little Witch proudly.
「But there is room for just two on my broomstick.」
The devil said, 「Me first!」
「我可以讓你騎上我的掃帚」她說
「真的嗎？」魔鬼說 「哇！」海盜說
「你真的能飛嗎？」太空人問 「等著瞧！」小女巫驕傲地說
「但我的掃帚柄上只有兩個人的地方。」 魔鬼說 「我先來！」
Little Witch sat in front. She said some magic words:
「Horrible borribe, Spinach pie, Come on, broomstick, Fly, fly, fly!」
WHOOSH! The broomstick shot off the porch and up into the sky.
小女巫坐在前面 她念了一串咒語：
「可怕可怕菠蘿派 掃帚掃帚飛起來」
掃帚嗖地一下飛了起來 穿過門廊飛上天空
Up and up they flew. The houses and trees looked like little toys.
Little Witch said more magic words: 「Bibbety boppety, Lizard soup, Broomstick, do a Loop-the-loop!」
The broomstick did a perfect Loop-the-loop.
他們飛得越來越高 房子和樹像玩具一樣小
小女巫又念了一段咒語：
「噼裡啪啦蜥蜴湯 掃帚掃帚轉個圈！」
掃帚完美地轉了個圈
「Wow!」 said the devil. 「You really are a wonderful witch.」
「Thank you,」 said Little Witch. 「And now...
「Alakazoo, Four-leaf clover, Back we fly -- Your turn is over.」
「哇！」惡魔說
「你真是個超級棒的女巫」
「謝謝你」小女巫說
「現在……阿拉喀左 四葉草車輪 往回飛——
你的飛行結束啦」
THUMP! The broomstick landed back on the porch. Next it was the pirate’s turn.
「Hold on tight!」 said Little Witch. And with another big WHOOSH they zoomed into the sky.
噗！掃帚在門廊前落地了 下一個輪到海盜了 「抓緊！」小女巫說
掃帚又一次嗖的一聲飛上了天
Soon they were flying over the ocean. Below them was a real pirate ship!
The pirate captain looked up. He did not believe what he saw.
「Shiver me timbers! A witch and a flying pirate!」 he shouted. Little Witch and her friend waved to the pirate captain.
很快他們飛到海洋上 下面是一艘真的海盜船 海盜船長抬頭看了看 他不敢相信自己的眼鏡
「嚇我一跳！女巫和會飛的海盜！」他叫道 小女巫和她的朋友向海盜船長招手
「Now we will fly home -- backward!」 said Little Witch.
She said the magic words: 「Mumbo jumbo, Broomy stick, Take us home -- And make it quick!」 They zoomed backward, over the ocean, over the town, and back to Little Witch’s porch.
「現在我們要飛回家啦——返回！」小女巫說
她念了一串咒語：「魔法魔法小掃把 快點快點——帶我回家！」他們往回飛 飛過海洋 飛過小鎮 回到了小女巫家的門廊
「Now it is my turn!」 said the astronaut. She got onto the broomstick and Little Witch said: 「Hocus-pocus, Peanut stew, Here’s a broomstick ride for you!」
And -- WHOOSH -- they were off.
「現在輪到我啦！」太空人說 她坐上掃帚 小女巫說：「呼啦啪啦 花生燉肉 這是給你的小掃帚！」
接著——呼啦一下——他們飛上了天
Little Witch and the astronaut flew over the big city. They whizzed around the tall buildings. They saw jack-o』-lanterns in the windows. The jack-o』-lanterns winked at them. Little Witch and the astronaut winked right back.

「Can you fly upside down?」 asked the astronaut. 「Yes, I can!」 said Little Witch, and she said the magic words: 「Harum-scarum, Witches』 vats, Now we’re hanging just like bats!」 Flip-flop! Upside down they flew over the roofs and past the moon.
「你可以倒著飛嗎？」太空人說 「我可以！」小女巫說了一段咒語：
「哈拉撒啦 女巫的桶啊 讓我們像蝙蝠一樣倒掛！」
譁啦！ 他們倒著飛過房簷 飛過月亮
Then the broomstick took them back to Little Witch’s porch. The three trick-or-treaters clapped their hands. 「This was the best Halloween yet!」 they said.
「Let’s go flying next year too!」 Little Witch smiled. 「That’s a good idea,」 she said. 「Well, good-bye,」 said the devil, the pirate, and the astronaut, 「And thank you!」
接著掃把帶他們回到小女巫的門前 三個惡作劇者鼓起了掌
「這是最棒的萬聖節！」他們說 「我們明年也這樣飛吧！」小女巫笑著說
「這是個好主意」她說 「那再見啦」惡魔 海盜和太空人說 「謝謝你！」
Little Witch waved good-bye to her friends. Then she swept the porch.
「I will be very good all year,」 she told Scrubby. 「Then Mother will punish me and I can fly again with my new friends.」
小女巫朝她的朋友揮手告別 然後掃了門廊 「我這一整年都會很乖的」她跟Scrubby說
「媽媽就會懲罰我 我就可以再和我的新朋友一起飛行了」
Little Witch was reading a bedtime story to Scrubby when the big witches came home. Grouchy Witch said, 「You missed the spookiest Halloween ever!」
Nasty Witch said, 「We scared all the children!」 Mother Witch said, 「I hope you learned your lesson.」
小女巫在給Scrubby講睡前故事 這時候大女巫們回來了
暴脾氣女巫說 「你錯過了最嚇人的萬聖節！」 討厭的女巫說：「我們把所有小孩子都嚇到了！」女巫媽媽說：「希望你得到教訓了」
「Because,」 said Mother Witch. 「I learned MY lesson. Halloween is not fun without you. I missed you, Little Witch!」
Then she gave Little Witch a big Halloween hug.
「因為」女巫媽媽說 「我得到教訓了 沒有你的萬聖節不好玩 我想你了 小女巫！」
接著她給了小女巫一個大大的擁抱
At bedtime Mother Witch told Little Witch a spooky story. Then she tucked her in. 「Next year you can fly with us. I promise,」 said Mother Witch.
「Can I bring some friends?」 asked Little Witch. 「Yes -- if you promise not to be too good,」 said Mother Witch.
睡覺時間女巫媽媽給小女巫講了一個可怕的故事 接著媽媽給她蓋好被子
「明年你可以跟我們一起飛了 我保證」女巫媽媽說「我可以帶朋友們一起嗎？」小女巫說
「可以——如果你答應我別這麼乖了」女巫媽媽說
「I will do my best, Mother,」 said Little Witch. And she really meant it.
Then Little Witch fell asleep and dreamed about the best Halloween ever.

蘭登Step into Reading level 3蘭登《STEP INTO READING》系列是一套非常適合小朋友們從基礎入門，極具趣味性的英語啟蒙原版書，來自美國著名大社Random House（蘭登書屋）的經典分級讀物。
蘭登是美國蘭登書屋的簡稱，它是世界上最大的童書出版商，在歐美，它是媽媽們心目中童書品質的保證。大家很熟悉的蘇斯博士的作品、貝貝熊系列、託馬斯、斯凱瑞金色童書系列，還有經典繪本《小黑魚》《和甘伯伯去遊河》這些都是蘭登出品的。
Step into Reading 這個系列共分為1-5階。包含了種類繁多的小說和非小說選題，並根據不同的選題搭配彩色插圖讓整個閱讀過程都變得非常有趣，循序漸進地讓孩子從繪本過渡到章節書的閱讀當中。
但其最終的目的並不僅僅是讓孩子能夠獨立自主閱讀，而是培養一個lifetime reader，使閱讀變成一個終身的習慣。
只要按部就班，孩子就能輕鬆成為一個自信的小讀者。
Step 1: Ready to Read
適合剛接觸英文的孩子，字體較大，頁數約為32頁，內容以簡單的高頻字彙為主，句型簡單、押韻。
Step 2: Reading with Help
適合Preschool至Grade1左右，頁數約為32頁~48頁，包含基本字彙和短句，由師長陪讀為主。
Step 3: Reading on your Own
適合Grade1~3左右，頁數約為48頁，內文開始運用過去式的時態及增加時下熱門的主題、主角等，這個階段孩子可以嘗試自己閱讀整本的故事內容。
Step 4: Reading Paragraphs
適合英文程度較好的小學高年級生閱讀，頁數約為48頁，內文與字句都較長且分段落。
Step 5: Ready for Chapters
適合小學高年級生至初中閱讀，單字較難句型也更多元，主題領域也更廣泛，例如時事、太空探險等。
蘭登分級讀物中，每一階級的語言難度都是層層遞進，拾級而上的。從第一階每頁只有兩三個單詞，到二階出現短句子，較長的句子，然後再慢慢過渡到段落、章節的閱讀。第三階段像是一個承上啟下的過渡階段，孩子們從這一階段開始慢慢的過渡到自主閱讀。
蘭登Step 1：適合3-6歲的小朋友閱讀，因為第一階的難度有一定跨度，既有字母書，也有情節曲折的小故事。簡單的詞彙，節奏韻律強，圖畫提示功能，再加上配套的不同版本音頻，非常適合作為學齡前小朋友英語學習的讀物。
蘭登Step 2：適合5-8歲的小朋友閱讀，適合已經有了基本的語感、能拼讀簡單詞彙的孩子。這套書的目標並不是讓孩子能獨立完成閱讀，而是在家長的幫助下慢慢進入閱讀狀態。所以家長在帶孩子聽或讀的時候，目標不要定到讓孩子全文自主閱讀，而是能和家長一起，你一句我半句這樣讀就好了。
蘭登Step 3：適合7-10歲的小朋友閱讀，這個級別的故事中有引人入勝的角色、容易理解的情節和與時俱進的熱門話題。這一階段孩子們可能會習慣安靜的獨立閱讀，家長們也還是要鼓勵孩子大聲朗讀，並以此來練習發音，當孩子們遇到不認識的生詞，提醒他們根據上下文情節理解其含義，這樣對於認識並記住生詞非常有幫助。
