1.gather[g(r)]動詞，表示「聚會；收集」,如：
In the evenings, we gathered around the fireplace and talked.
晚上，我們聚在火爐邊聊天。gather引申的意思就是「推斷」，如：
What did you gather from his statement?你推斷他的聲明是什麼意思？
★gathering[gr]gather+ing，構詞名詞「集會、聚會；聚集」（很多人聚在一起）。如：a small family gathering一個家庭小聚會

★together [tge(r)]to表示「到」+gether=gather聚會，聚到一起，構詞副詞「一起，共同」。如：

短語bring together使……團結起來（把人帶到一起就是團結起來）如：The loss of their son brought the parents together.
夫妻雙方因為失去兒子而言歸於好。
★altogether[:ltge(r)]，al前綴（表示「全部」）+together一起、共同，構詞副詞「全部地，完全」。如：
I don’t altogether agree with you.我不完全同意你的觀點。
I’m not altogether happy with the dicision.我對決定不十分滿意。
2.不同意某人觀點、建議或計劃，就是不信任他的判斷力或能力，被懷疑的這一方很可能會立個誓言，來保證自己的計劃的可行性，表示「誓約、誓言」的詞根是gage。
★engage[nged]，en前綴（置於……中）+gage誓約、誓言，構詞動詞「使從事於…..;聘用；訂婚」。
They are engaged to eath other.他們訂婚了。（engage訂婚）
短語engage in從事於，參加。如：
I have never engaged in the drug trade.我從未參與過毒品交易。
★engaged [ngedd]engage+ed，構詞形容詞「使用中的，忙碌的」
My sister is engaged in writing novel.我姐姐正忙著寫小說呢。
I can’t come to the dinner on Tuesday.I’m not otherwise engaged.
我星期二不能參加宴會，我有別的事情。

★engagement [ngedmnt]，engage動詞+ment名詞後綴，是engage的名詞形式「約會，訂婚」。如：
Their engagement was announced in the local paper.
他們訂婚的消息刊登在地方報紙上。
3.再浪漫的婚姻都離不可靠柴米油鹽汽，這裡的「汽」就是指煤氣gas，gas「氣體、汽油、煤氣」。如：
Air is a mixture of gases.空氣是一種混合的氣體。
Turn the gas on and we』ll have a cup of tea.點上煤氣，咱們沏杯茶吧。★gasoline[gsli:n]汽油（gas+ol=oil石油+ine名詞後綴），是gas的同意詞。如：The method can save gasoline.這辦法可以省油。
We stopped at the filling station because we needed gasoline.
我們在加油站停下來，因我們需要加油。
