我們經常提到在學英文過程中不時會碰到一個困難,那就是一個英文字,或一個表達形式有好幾種不同的意思。今天我們要給大家介紹的一個常用語就是很好的例子。這個常用語就是:To knock off. To knock off 這個常用語至少有六,七個不同的解釋。正因為如此,我們今天可能要打破常規,不能像平時那樣每次講兩個習慣用語,而是只能講一個習慣用語了。

 

首先,to knock off 可以解釋為:停止工作。比如說,有兩個油漆工人在粉刷房子,其中一個工人突然發現時間已經很晚了,於是他對另一個工人說:

 

"Say, Charlie, do you know it's already six o'clock? Time to knock off. We can finish painting this room tomorrow."

 

這個人說:"我說呀,查理,你知道現在已經六點鐘了嗎? 該停工啦。我們可以明天來把這間房間粉刷完。"

 

有的時候, to knock off 還可以解釋為:降低某一個商品的價錢。下面這個例子是一個人在電話上對他的朋友講他新買的汽車。

 

"Sally, let me tell you, I got a great bargain on my new Ford Escort! I bought it from my brother-in-law so he knocked fifteen percent off the dealer list price."

 

這人說:"薩莉,我告訴你,我新買的福特 escort 型汽車,價錢可真便宜。我是從我姐夫那兒買來的,所以他在汽車推銷商列出的價格基礎上給我打了百分之十五的折扣。"

 

To knock off 的另一個意思是:很粗魯地命令別人不許說話,不許作聲。這在軍隊裡用的更普遍。我們來舉個例子。要是一個軍官很晚回到軍營,可是儘管已經過了息燈時間,他發現他手下的士兵還沒睡覺。於是,他就說:

 

"All right, men! Knock off all the noise and turn the lights out right now! Any more noise out of you and you'll be scrubbing latrines this weekend!"

 

這個軍官對他手下的士兵說:"行啦,你們這些人。馬上關燈,不許再出聲。你們再要有一點聲音,這個周末你們就去打掃廁所。"

 

大家每個星期都盼望周末,好出去輕鬆一下。要被罰去掃廁所那簡直是可怕,所以是一個很有效的威脅。

 

上面我們講的三種有關 to knock off 的解釋是:停止工作,不許做聲,降低價格,它們都帶有抑制的含義。可是,to knock off 還有一個和這些相反的意思,那就是:不顧質量匆忙地寫什麼東西。下面說話的是一個學生,由於他當晚一定要完成第二天必須交的作業,所以不能和同學一起去看電影。他說:

 

"I'd love to go to the movies with you, but tonight I have to stay home and knock off a term paper for my English class. I won't spend much time on it but I need to turn in something tomorrow to make sure I pass the course."

 

他說:"我真想和你們一起去看電影。可是,今晚我得呆在家裡給英語課寫期終報告。我不會在這份報告上花很多時間,但是為了肯定能通過這一課程,我明天必須交點作業。"

 

To knock off 還有一個最可怕的意思,那就是: 謀殺。這個用法在犯罪集團裡很普遍。犯罪集團之間往往競爭很激烈,下面是一個集團的頭頭在和他的助手說話:

 

"Louie, we've got to do something quick about these guys from Chicago coming in here to sell dope in our territory. What do you think -- how about we knock off one of these guys as an example and scare the rest out of town?"

 

這個犯罪集團的頭目說:"路易,那些正在從芝加哥來的傢伙要在我們地盤上販毒。我們得趕快採取行動。要不我們幹掉他一個,殺雞給猴看,把其他人嚇跑。你看, 怎麼樣?"

 

當然,我們大家恐怕不會用這種口氣說話。但是,懂得這個俗語的意思也是很有用的。

 

以上講了 to knock off 這個常用語的五種不同解釋,它們包括:停止工作,不許出聲,降低價格,不顧質量地匆忙寫文章,以及謀殺。其實,我們今天講的並不是to knock off 的全部解釋,它還可以指:吃東西吃的非常快;沒有得到許可就模仿其他產品等。我們很清楚,僅僅一個常用語就有那末多解釋確實能使人感到很混亂。但是,實際上,問題並不是太複雜的。要是你在看書報時遇到這一常用語,你只要注意上下文就會懂得 to knock off 是什麼意思了。要是你在和別人講話時對方用 to knock off 這個俗語,那你可以從周圍發生的事或他正在談論的主題中了解它的意思。
