Unveil Marion Peck's magical paintings 美國藝術家瑪莉安·派克的亞洲首個展《異想世界》正在唐妮詩畫廊-上海熱展中。今天就讓我們走近藝術家的作品，更全面的了解她的創作理念。American artist Marion Peck’s first solo exhibition in Asia is on show at Danysz gallery- Shanghai. An opportunity for the Shanghai audience to discover the enchanting and surrealistic world of the artist.

此次個展呈現了藝術家2019年和2020年創作的小尺幅作品，關於這樣罕見的小尺寸作品，派克這樣闡述她的靈感與選擇：「我最近發現了一位美國上世紀中葉的超現實主義畫家，格特魯德·阿伯克朗比（Gertrude Abercrombie），這次展覽在很多方面都受到了她的啟發。她創作了一些簡單但具有魔力的小尺幅畫作，這也是我試圖用自己的方式在這次展覽中呈現的作品。由於我肩膀的問題，使我無法再進行大尺幅作品的創作了。但是我不斷發現，那些局限性往往會激勵我的創作，局限往往能帶來無限可能。」

The exhibition is presenting a series of relatively small paintings created during the last two years. When asked about the size of her paintings, Peck says: 「I recently discovered an American mid-century surrealist artist named Gertrude Abercrombie, and in many ways this show was inspired by her work. She worked on a small scale, making simple but magical little paintings, and that is what I am trying to do here, in my own way. Problems with my shoulder have made it impossible for me to work on a large scale any longer, but I am finding that the limitations have a stimulating effect on my creativity, as limitations often do.」

Exhibition view, image: Danysz gallery如果你仔細觀察，會發現在《異想世界》中，熊、烏鴉、貓、魚等動物形象往往是畫面的主角，那麼這些動物是否具有某種象徵意義呢？藝術家卻不這麼認為：「 『象徵主義』不是我想選擇來形容我繪畫方式的詞彙。當我們認為某物是一種象徵時，便把自身抽象化了，就像是我們盯著地圖，而不是放眼周圍，觀賞自己身處其中的風景。那些我畫中的動物通過夢境和想像來到我身邊。我只是盡力去再現（re-present）它們。」

這是我做的一個夢，一隻熊突然從樹林裡出來，闖入我的房間。我選擇在夢中將自己描繪成一種恐懼的情感，而非物化的我。This was a dream I had, that a bear suddenly came from out in the woods into a room I was standing in. I chose to depict myself in the dream as the emotion of fear, rather than as my physical self.In her latest works, animal figures like bears, crows, cats and fishes have become dominant in the frame. Is there any symbolism attached to these creatures? 「 'Symbolism' isn’t the word I would choose," says Peck, "to describe the approach I take to making paintings. As soon as we think of something as a 'symbol' we put ourselves in an abstraction, we are looking at the map instead of looking around at the landscape we find ourselves in. The animals that found their way into my paintings came to me through dreams and visions. I just do my best to re-present them.」

想要超越常規的、日常的、被太陽意識驅使的自我，就要向黑暗邁近。To move beyond normal, everyday, ego driven solar consciousness is a move towards darkness.

《異想世界》的多數作品一改往常藝術家的風格，色調偏暗。瑪莉安·派克熱愛光明，但也熱愛黑暗：「黑暗是個謎，是道教的陰級，是女性化的，是海洋、夜空與潛意識的深處。. 我發現一天最神奇的時刻是黎明和黃昏，當明暗轉換位置的時候。在那裡我們可以感覺到一塊世界之間的地方。那就是我想要畫的地方」。

In some ways, the paintings exhibited in the show BETWEEN WORLDS have a darker aura than the artist’s previous works. Marion Peck says she loves the light as well as the darkness: "Darkness is mystery, the yin of the Tao, the feminine, the depths of the ocean, of the night sky, of the subconscious. ... I find the most magical times are dawn and dusk, when light and dark are changing places. There we can sense a place between worlds. That’s the place I’m trying to paint."
