母校不是「mother school」,母語也不是「mother language」!

最近大白在追一部名叫《少年派》的劇，吸引我的地方應該就是那種和睦的家庭關係，還有熟悉的校園生活，想必每一個看劇的人，邊看腦海中都能想到自己曾經生活過和奮鬥過的母校吧！

時間過得很快，轉眼已經到了六月中旬，中高考也都相繼結束了，對於自己曾經揮灑過汗水與青春的母校來說，我們永遠不會忘懷，那今天大白就帶大家學學「母校」的英文表達是什麼！

Alma Mater

很多人腦中對「母校」的英文印象只有「mother school」，還有人會將其翻譯成「former school」，很負責任的告訴你，都不對，正確表達應該是「Alma Mater」。

看到這，有些同學就開始好奇了，這是個什麼單詞，根本就沒見過啊！沒見過很正常，因為「Alma Mater」源自拉丁語，意思是表示「養育生育的母親」，現在多用來形容「母校」和「高校的校歌」，如果你記不住的話，也可以用「old school」來表示母校，也一樣是正確的。

例句：He has fond feelings for his Alma Mater.

他對自己的母校有著深厚的感情。

I still have affection for my old school.

我依然眷戀著母校。

1、校友

我們都知道「classmate」是指「同學」，那校友是不是就是「school mate」，當然是正確的啦，哈哈～英文中「school mate」和「school fellow」都可表示「校友；老同學；同窗」等意思。

但表示「校友」用的最多的詞和最地道的表達是「alumni」和「alumnae」，前者是alumnus（男校友）的複數形式，後者是alumna（女校友）的複數形式。

2、母語

說到母語，有些人最先想到的就是「mother language」，但其實這是不正確的。大家在學生時期，老師們應該都說過，關於「母語」最最正宗的說法是「mother tongue」，tongue主要指語言，方言或人的說話能力，所以「mother tongue」自然就是指原始語言，即母語。

所以母語千萬別說成「mother language", 如果你非要用language的話，你只能用「native language」來表達，這樣才正確。

例句：Happiness is learning to get by, although it is not our mother tongue.

幸福是可以通過學習來獲得的，儘管它不是我們的母語。

English is not my native language.

英語不是我的母語。

3、母公司

看完上面的母校和母語的表達，想必你再也不會將「母公司」直接翻譯成「mother company」了吧！那該如何翻譯呢？我們需要從母公司的本意出發去理解，母公司及公司的總公司，所以應該用「parent company」或「parent firm」來表達。

例句：This company is about to incorporate with its parent company.

詹森先生的公司已決定和母公司合併。
