ain't，它原本是美國南部一幫文盲、粗人（但非原住民）說的話，現在趨於普遍，並且已經收入到了各類詞典當中。最開始它是am not的縮寫，最初寫作amn't，後由於發音連讀問題（省去前一個輔音m，只發後一個輔音n），以訛傳訛地變成了ain't，顯然，這是由一個be動詞am和一個否定詞not組成的，所以原則上只適用於任何am not的縮寫情況。
在英國，ain't一般只用工人階級，比如那些說倫敦方言，通常被認為是不正當的。中產階級和上流社會，與19世紀的英國，樂意使用在熟悉的演講和中上層階級的教育。
