The thing is
最近一段時間比較忙，沒有怎麼跟朋友們聯繫，昨天一個朋友找我，順便抱怨說我不搭理他，我趕緊解釋說：
I’m sorry I didn’t call you. The thing is, I』ve been really busy lately.
抱歉沒跟你打電話，主要是我最近都很忙。
Today，we gonna learn the expression 「the thing is」.
The thing is字面上的意思是「事情是」，however，in spoken english, it is used to introduce an important fact, reason or explanation.
在口語中，我們用它來說明一個重要的事實、原因或者解釋。其實大家可以通俗地理解為我們常說的「重點是、事實是、主要是...」。
做生意的人，一旦看到一點起色，都想擴大自己的業務，但是這也不是一件很容易的事。
I know you want to expand the business. The thing is, we haven’t got the money to do that.
我知道你想拓展業務，但重點是，我們沒錢啊。
I've got onto a course. But the thing is, I don't know whether I want to do it anymore.
我在上一個課，但關鍵是，我不知道還要不要繼續上。
You say the thing is to introduce an explanation, comment, or opinion, that relates to something that has just been said.
The thing is is often used to identify a problem relating to what has just been said.
當我們談論一件事的時候，可以用the thing is來引出關於這件事的解釋、評論或者意見，常常是指出一個相關的問題。
比如說朋友約你去bar，大家知道去bar一般會回家比較晚，但是呢，你的父母給了你10點的宵禁，所以你可以回答說：
I wanna go, but the thing is, my parents like me to be home by ten o'clock.
我很想去，但重點是我爸媽希望我10點前回家。
再比如說，你很想參加一個旅行團去歐洲行，但是因為團費太貴了，所以，
I'd like to come, but the thing is, I just can't afford it.
The thing is還有一個意思是The main or fundamental issue or element (of what's being discussed)，used to emphasize the importance of what you are saying.
表示所談論事情的主要的或者基本的因素，強調所說事情的重要性。
The thing is to keep a good distance from the car in front of you, when you're driving in snow.
下雪天開車一定要注意和你前面的車保持一定的距離。
The thing is, my car broke down, so how can I drive?
重點是，我的車壞掉了，還怎麼開啊？
A: 'What does your market research consist of?'
你的市場調研包括什麼呀？
B: 'Well, the thing is, it depends on our target age group.'
關鍵是看我們不同年齡的目標群體。
Many people asked me, 「how do you learn english?」 or 「do you have any successful experience that you can share with us?」
I would say, learning a language is not a easy task, the thing is, you need to have a lot of input, when you want to use the language, there are things in your mind which you can make use of.
