The horse had the plain entirely to himself. A stag intruded into his domain and shared his pasture. The horse, desiring to revenge himself on the stranger, requested a man, if he were willing to help him in punishing the stag.
The man replied, that if the horse would receive a bit in his mouth and agree to carry him, he would contrive very effectual weapons against the stag. The horse consented, and allowed the man to mount him.
From that hour he found that, instead of obtaining revenge on the stag, he had enslaved himself to the service of man.
Moral:
He who seeks to injure others often injures only himself.
從前,馬獨自佔據著一片大草原。突然有一天,有隻鹿闖進了馬的領地,和他一起享用這片草地。馬想要報復鹿,於是請求人類幫助。
那個人答應了,說如果馬同意讓人在自己嘴上安個嚼子,並讓人騎在背上的話,那個人願意設法用最厲害的武器對付鹿。馬同意了,就讓人騎到他的身上。
但馬很快就明白,還沒有趕走鹿,他自己已經成為人的奴隸,只能任人差遣,為其效勞了。
