據新京報 9月18日的一篇名為《製造「凡爾賽學」：那些既想炫耀又故作低調的人》的文章，最早將這種「明明沒有一句話在直接炫耀，卻能明確感受到發言者溢於言表的驕傲」的表達方式總結為「凡爾賽學」的人是微博網友@小奶球 。

前文所述的「凡爾賽文學」三要素：先抑後揚、似貶實褒靈活運用自問自答和熟練借用他人評價，也是由他總結。

@小奶球 在接受《南方周末》的採訪時表示，「凡爾賽學」這個名字的靈感來源於講述18世紀末法國凡爾賽宮貴族生活的日本漫畫《凡爾賽玫瑰》，漫畫內容是關於路易十六老婆的上流生活故事，很有貴族氣息，博主@小奶球就用凡爾賽來指代朋友圈貴族。

在英語裡也有堪稱「矯揉造作」的詞：humblebrag，意為「以看似謙虛的方式自誇」。

這個詞是由兩個完全相反的單詞構成的，humble（謙遜的，自謙的）和brag（吹牛，自誇），用來形容網絡熱梗「凡爾賽」簡直是再適合不過了！

《韋氏詞典》對humblebrag的定義：

to make a seemingly modest, self-critical, or casual statement or reference that is meant to draw attention to one's admirable or impressive qualities or achievements
