until是日常生活中常用的一個表示時間的詞彙，它作介詞或連詞，意思是「到…時;直到…為止」。 till和until意思相同. Till歷史更悠久，但一般為非正式用語，用的相對較少。
They played football until/ till it's dark.
他們踢足球踢到天黑。
I didn't go to bed until/ till I finished reading the book.
我直到讀完這本書才睡覺。
I'm not gonna say a word until/ till I get a lawyer.
在見到律師之前我一句話也不會說。
在使用until時，有時候我們會對（主）句中裡究竟是肯定句還是否定句產生疑惑，究竟是用until還是not ... until？ 要搞清楚這個問題，關鍵是要看（主）句中的謂語動詞是短暫性動詞還是延續性動詞。
1，（主）句中的謂語動詞是延續性動詞
肯定句句型，「到、、、為止」，表示動作一直持續到所說時間為止。如:
They drove on until they reached a small town.
他們開著車直到到達一個小鎮。
I'll stay here until the rain stops.
我會呆在這兒直到雨停。
We lived in the countryside until two decades ago.
二十年前我們一直住在鄉下。
They kept singing and dancing until midnight.
他們一直唱歌跳舞到午夜。
I have no idea about it until now.
迄今為止，我對此一無所知。
當然，（主）句中的謂語動詞是延續性動詞，也可以用否定句，但表達的是不同意思。
I surfed the net until mother came back.
我上網衝浪直到媽媽回來。
I did not surf the net until mother came back.
直到媽媽回來我才上網。
2，（主）句中的謂語動詞是短暫性動詞
否定句句型中，「直到、、、才」，表示動作從until表示的時間才開始。
Don't/Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.
今日事，今日畢。
He didn't realize it was a big mistake until years later.
直到幾年後他才意識到這是個大錯誤。
I won't leave until I finish my work.
我不完成工作就不走。
The train didn't arrive until two hours later.
火車兩小時後才到達。
I never wake up until the alarm goes off.
我向來要到鬧鐘響了才醒來。
注意，否定句中until常常可以和before意思相似，所以可用before互換。
Most children do not start school until/before they are six years old.
大多數孩子六歲才開始上學。
3，not until 狀語在句首，（主）句子要用倒裝句，如：
Not until the end of the day did they give up searching.
直到一天結束，他們才放棄尋找。
Not until you apologize will I leave this room.
你不道歉，我就不走了。
Not until we got home did the rain stop.
直到我們到家雨才停。
注意：
有時候，我們還用「It's not until ... that...」，這是強調句，強調的是not until ...狀語, （主）句子要恢復陳述句：
It was Not until we got home that the rain stopped.
直到我們到家雨才停。
