Today I wanna talk something about translation. As we all know, generally, we have two ways to translate Chinese into English and English into Chinese as well. One is called "LiteralTranslation" which means "word for word" translation. The other one is "Free translation" which is also called "sense for sense" translation. It means you translate according to the meaning of the text. Let's take some examples.
今天我想和大家聊聊翻譯。眾所周知，通常來說，英漢互譯有兩種方法，一種是「直譯」，也就是字面意思翻譯。另一種是「意譯」，也就是根據意思翻譯。下面我們來舉幾個例子。
We have had an anti-corruption TV drama called "人民的名義"，the translation is "In the Name of People". Here the phrase "in the name of... " means "以...的名義". Of course, it's been translated literally.
我們曾經有個反腐題材的電視劇，叫「人民的名義」，翻譯是"In the Name of People"。這裡詞組"in the name of... " 是「以 。。。的名義」的意思。當然了，這個翻譯就是直譯。
However，we have another TV drama recently called "以家人之名". Do you know how to translate it literally? It must be"In the Name of Family". But the English name of this drama given officially is "Go ahead". Apparently, it's not literal translation but free translation.
最近的一部電視劇，叫「以家人之名」。你知道怎麼用直譯法來翻譯嗎？肯定是"In the Name of Family"了。但是官方給出的翻譯是"Go ahead"。這很顯然不是直譯，而是意譯。
Mostly, we'll use literal translation but in some cases we will choose free translation in order to make it better understood , such as poems, idioms, and so on.
多數情況下，我們都用直譯法，但是在某些情況下，為了更好理解，我們會選擇意譯，比如翻譯詩歌、成語等。
Let's look at some examples. I bet you know Libai's famous poem "靜夜思". Of course you can translate the name as 「Thoughts in a quiet Night」 literally. But if you know the meaning of this poem, you can also translate it as 「Homesick in Bright Moonlight」. That is Free Translation.
讓我們來舉幾個例子。我相信你一定知道李白的詩「靜夜思」。你當然可以直譯成「Thoughts in a quiet Night」 。但是如何你知道這首詩所表達的意思，你也可以將它意譯成 「Homesick inBright Moonlight」。
Also the Chinese idiom "亡羊補牢" can be translated as "Better late than never". There's nothing to do with sheep or jail. But you can easily understand the meaning of this idiom from this free translation.
還有，中國的成語「亡羊補牢」可以意譯成"Better late than never"。這個翻譯和「羊」或者「牢」沒有絲毫關係，但你仍能通過翻譯輕鬆地知道這個成語的意思。
So when you do the translation, you need to analyze which way is better for the comprehension and pick it.
所以，當你在翻譯的時候，你需要去分析用哪種翻譯方法對理解更有益，然後選擇它。
