Goody two-shoes這個說法有點老派，但有時還是會被使用，以幽默方式表達負面意義。許多資料顯示這個說法來自於童話故事The History of Little Goody Two Shoes，這個故事是關於一個名叫古迪（Goody）的窮苦小女孩，她只有一隻鞋子。有一天她受贈得到兩隻鞋，於是高興地四處告訴大家她有一雙完整的鞋了，後來還嫁給了一個富翁，是個有完美結局的故事。
這個故事的寓意是：如果你是個好心又正直的人，你就會遇到很多好事（寓意與現在的意思完全不同）。儘管這個說法相當合理，還是有人認為這個詞在1670年就已經出現，時間比這個故事還要早100年。因此很有可能是因為這個故事的關係，才讓這個用法普遍化。
後來Goody two-shoes被用來指那些假正經的人；偽善者，其英文釋義為：An exceedingly and/or haughtily prudish, self-righteous, or rigidly moral person; someone who conforms inflexibly to the rules or the law.
