「熟詞偏義」是英語中常見的情況，看似每個單詞都認識，連在一起就不知道是什麼意思。
比如下面的表達：
cold feet是什麼意思？
這個詞表示膽怯，恐懼，通常用來形容事到臨頭就變得沒有勇氣了。因為cold除了表示冷以外，還有令人沮喪的，掃興的意思。

"The devil（魔鬼）finds work for idle（懶散的）hands."其實是一句諺語,本意為「手閒著沒事做,魔鬼替你找活兒幹」,意譯為：遊手好閒,造惡之源。

go hand in hand
hand in hand 的意思是「手拉手」，go hand in hand 則表示「兩件事情有著密切聯繫」。
試想一下，能手拉手一起走的人肯定關係都非常密切，所以，這裡的 go hand in hand 不僅僅可以用來表示「人的關係親密」， 也可以用來描述「有密切關係的事務」。

put one's foot down
It means to take a firm position. 就是「堅持某人的態度或主張、堅定立場、固執己見」的意思。表示下定決心，絕不妥協。
She had a beef with her husband. Finally, she put her foot down and left home for good with her children.
她和她丈夫吵了一架，最後固執己見，帶著孩子永遠的離開了家
