After completing this journal-based SA-CME activity, participants will be able to:
■ Describe the normal maturation pattern of normal bone marrow and the appearance of residual or reconverted bone marrow in an adult.
■ Discuss the different imaging tools for workup of musculoskeletal hematologic malignancies and their advantages and disadvantages.
■ Recognize the spectrum of characteristic musculoskeletal imaging appearances of common hematologic malignancies.
Conclusion
Hematologic malignancies, including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that may affect bone marrow as a primary disease or secondarily as metastatic disease. Although myriad variables affect decisions about clinical management in each of these diseases, the presence or absence of osseous involvement is a critical diagnostic factor that is common to most cases, both at initial diagnosis and at subsequent management of these diseases. In this regard, imaging plays a central role.
Since imaging findings of musculoskeletal involvement are so varied, the radiologist’s understanding of the spectrum of pre- and posttreatment imaging appearances of these diseases is crucial to optimal management. The radiologist must also be familiar with the advantages, disadvantages, and common practices of use of the standard imaging tools for assessment of these common diseases, as well as with newer imaging tools that may become part of routine clinical practice, such as whole-body MR imaging using DWI with background body signal suppression or dynamic contrast enhancement and FDG PET/MR imaging.
