全世界人都知道，貓有九條命Cat has nine lives ，但好奇心害死了它。
「好奇心害死貓」這句俗語，通常用於阻止別人提出不想要的問題。
對於好奇心，一直沒有積極的肯定。
聖奧古斯丁在公元397年的《懺悔錄》中寫道，在創造天地之前，上帝「為好奇的人建造了地獄」。
約翰·克拉克在1639年的《言語學》一書中提出，「窺探每一片雲彩的人都可能被雷電擊中」。
貓科動物好奇的事實，使人們將貓科動物死亡的根源與「好奇」相關聯。
但這句俗語最早見諸文字，應該是1898年加爾維斯頓每日新聞：據說有一次「好奇心害死了一隻託馬斯貓」 （託馬斯貓Thomas cat是湯姆貓Tom cat的一種開玩笑的形式，即公貓。）
