Uranus-天王星

 

Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun.

By diameter it is the third largest.

Uranus is also a Gas Giant.

Uranus was discovered (發現) in 1781.

James Herschel discovered the planet, but his proposed (提議的) name for the planet was rejected (拒絕).

Johann Bode gave the accepted name Uranus.

 

Uranus has rings, 13 rings go round the planet.

Uranus has 27 moons.

The planet is a cyan (青色) coloured.

The poles (北極和南極) on Uranus seem to be in the wrong place.

With the poles being on the side of the planet, not the top.

This means a night on a pole can last up to 21 Earth years.

One day on Uranus is about 17 Earth hours.

One year on Uranus takes 84 Earth years.

 

Uranus is, at closest, 2.6 billion kilometres from Earth

At its furthest it is 3.2 billion kilometres from Earth.

It takes light roughly 2 and a half hours to travel from Uranus to Earth.

At our current level of technology (技術), it would take nearly 10 years to travel to Uranus.

Like Venus Uranus, has a retrograde rotation (逆行旋轉).

Uranus is the coldest planet in the solar system, -224 degrees Celsius.

Uranus is the only planet named after a Greek god, not a Roman version.

 Uranus the God 

Uranus takes its name from the Greek god Ouranos.

Uranus was the Greek god of the sky and heaven.

He is a primordial (原始的) god.

At first having no shape, but merely being as an element (元件).

He was husband to Gaia, his mother and wife.

(also spelt Gaea)

He and Gaia had many children,

The Titans. 

The Cyclopses (獨眼巨人), one eyed giants. 

The Hecatoncheires, fifty headed giants with 100 hands. 

Uranus considered all his children a threat to his power.

Apart from the Titans he thought them all ugly and was repelled (擊退) at their sight.

He eventually imprisoned ( 關押) them under the earth.

Uranus couldn’t be killed. 

However, Gaia with the help of her son overthrew (推翻) him.

Aphrodite is said to be a result of the gruesome (可怕的) way Uranus was overthrown.

Atlas at one time held the weight of Uranus to prevent him getting close to Gaia.

It was thought the rain was Uranus still fertilizing (施肥)the Earth.

 

Note: I have used but one version of the Uranus story, as with all ancient myths you will find different variations.
