This week we will Look at Mercury (水星).
The planet closest to the sun is called Mercury.
最接近太陽的行星叫做水星。
Mercury is also the smallest of the planets in our solar system.
水星也是太陽系中最小的行星。
Mercury has no moon.
水星沒有月亮。
Mercury in comparison to Earth.
A day on Mercury is longer than a year.
水星的一天超過一年。
A full day/ night cycle on Mercury is 175.97 earth days.
However, a year, one orbit of the sun, is 87.97 days.
This is the shortest trip round the sun of all the planets.
Day time temperatures (溫度) can be 430 Degrees Celsius ( 攝氏溫度).
Night time can be as cold as minus 180 degrees Celsius.
The planet got its name from the Roman God Mercury.
這顆行星的名字來自羅馬神水星。
In Greece Hermes is the similar god.
在希臘愛馬仕是類似的神。
Mercury is the God of commerce (商業), financial gain (經濟利益), communication (通訊), travellers (遊客) and messages (訊息).
He is also a god for thieves and tricksters.
Being a fleet footed (健步如飛) messenger, is the reason the planet Mercury was named after him.
Mercury also played an important role in going between mortals (凡人) and gods and mediating (調解) any problems.
Images of Mercury the god often show him to have a winged cap.
Mercury also has winged sandals.
He carries a staff (Caduceus). This staff has two snakes wrapped round it and often is shown with wings at the top.
Mercury is often thought to be the son of Jupiter (木星), who we will learn more about later. In ancient times the Mercuralia festival was held on the 15th of May. Also called the festival of Mercury.
Finally Mercury had another role, which was accompanying the dead to the underworld (地獄), ruled by Pluto (冥王星) ( another god who we will meet later).
