「Shoestring」這個英文單詞在字面上是「鞋帶」的意思，不過現在大家都常用「Shoelace」來表示。
那「Live on a shoestring」這句俚語到底是什麼意思呢?
「Shoestring」除了可以指鞋帶，還可以用來表示「錢很少」的意思。
「Shoestring」跟錢有什麼關係? 據說在以前有很多四處流浪的攤販，為了方便搬家，他們都是賣一些小東西，像縫紉針線、小茶壺和鞋帶等都很暢銷，這些小東西價錢很便宜，所以攤販賺的錢只夠餬口。
後來「Shoestring」這個英文單詞就演變成「錢很少」的意思。
所以，「Live on shoestring」是指靠很少錢生活、經濟拮据、要勒緊褲頭生活的意思。
