1. To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study itsmajor cities.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the state might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
Where do we start when we want to learnabout a new society? For the speaker, the answer seems very clear: we shouldlook at its major cities. While the cities shed light on many importantaspects of a society, I argue that thelesser-known areas are still not to be overlooked.
開篇：疑問設問點題，然後讓步提出自己觀點。
For starters, it would be silly tounderstand the value of major cities in displaying important traits of asociety. Just look at New York.When the American economy was down, New York was the first to feel chill: bankrupted business, jobless people,and empty stores. New York is not just the financial center of America; itis also its cultural center. Beinglabeled as one of the most diverse countries in the world, Americaembraces people of all ethnicities and colors in its society, as can also be vividly displayed on NewYork's streets. New York does not care where you're from. You can beAmerican, Hungarian, Thai, Chinese, Ethiopian, or Nigerian, but you canstill be New Yorker.
首先，舉例描述典型主要城市的特徵。舉例方法：列舉、概括、說明。
However, it is exactly because big cities catch the spotlight that they tend to displayonly the things under the spotlight. When one thinks about Americanculture, one easily relates to Hollywood images and Billboard hotlists. Thesebelong to contemporary pop culture. Butthe American countryside has also had its share of contribution: countrymusic. Maybe one would say thatwe still get to see country music performances in big cities. Yes, you see country music stars likeBlake Shelton and Keith Urban, who probably never had a day of work in thebarn. The authentic country musicbelongs to the real experiences of real working countrymen; it is more than just a highly commercializedpattern of notes or a meaninglessjuxtaposition of words like "cold beer, dirt road, or pickuptruck" that supposedly symbolize country life.
轉折，論述大城市特徵不符合社會主要特徵的地方和原因：舉例(列舉)、讓步、假設。
Likewise, city dwellers often tend to holddifferent cultural values from country residents. If you go to New York, you may be under the illusion that the whole of America embraces the values ofdiversity and liberalism. You would beoblivious to the fact that thereis a vast part of America that is conservative and holds many traditionalvalues. This is not to judge which value is preferable; rather, I am here to argue that neither large cities like New York nor minor places can represent what American people believe in. Totry to find one place that displays what is innately heterogeneous is initself, a futile practice to begin with.
論證：辯證深化論點，大城市或小地方，其實都有無可忽視的獨特性。
Overall, understanding a society takesmore effort than just looking at these major cities. While this is an important step, it is just one step among many before gathering enough information aboutthat society.
結論：大城市固然重要，讓步辯證式清醒認識到大城市之外的重要性。
