From October 27 to 28, the Data Assimilation and Observational System Working Group (DAOS-WG) Meeting which was a part of The meeting of Observing System Research and Predictability Experiment (THORPEX) was held in Beijing. Jiao Meiyan, Deputy Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) attended this meeting and made a speech. Experts from Numerical Weather Prediction Center, National Satellite Meteorological Center, Institute of Meteorological Administration of CMA and so on attended the meeting.

At the meeting, relevant experts discussed the technological development of the Global and Regional Assimilation and Prediction System (GRAPES) originally developed by China and reviewed the progress of observational data application. Main topics focus on GRAPES global four-dimension variation (4DVar) progresses, GRAPES global hybrid 3DVar, GRAPES-3DVar using multigrid technique and its application to mesoscale system analysis, wind profiler net design and observation quality control, Fengyun-3 radiance data quality improvement and assimilation and so on.

The DAOS-WG was formed in 2008 as part of the THORPEX programme. It aims to facilitate the development of advanced numerical weather prediction (NWP) capabilities, especially to improve high-impact weather forecasts. DAOS will be primarily concerned with data assimilation and observing system issues from the convective scale to planetary scales and for forecasts with time ranges of hours to weeks.
