12月13日出版的《自然》（Nature）增刊「2018自然指數—中國」顯示，2012年至2017年中國對自然指數的貢獻增長了75%，增幅顯著超出多個排名領先的國家，如美國、德國、英國和日本。中國在自然指數中所佔的全球科研產出份額也由9%上升到16%。
自然指數於2014年11月首次發布，自然指數主要對前一年各科研機構在Nature系列、Science、Cell等82種自然科學類期刊上發表的研究型論文數量進行計算和統計。
「2018自然指數—中國」增刊發表了一系列專題文章分析了中國在化學、植物生物學、天文學及太空科學、生物醫學工程和納米科學這些優勢領域的科研表現和領先地位。一篇以「Strong spending compounds chemistry prowess」為題的文章指出化學是中國最具實力的學科領域。從2012年到2017年，中國在自然指數中的化學論文分值（FC 2012-2017）增長了84%，位列全球第二，居美國之後。相比之下，美國則下降了10％。在有機化學領域，中國更是在2015年超過美國位居第一位。
