CMA and Harvard to strengthen exchanges on climate change

In the morning of June 23, Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Zheng Guoguang met Prof. Mc. Elroy from School of Engineering and Applied Sciences of Harvard University in CMA. The 2 sides exchanged views on many issues including climate change adaptation, wind and solar energy development, scientific research coordination and etc. Deputy Administrator of CMA Jiao Meiyan, Director-General of National Climate Center Song Lianchun and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering Ding Yihui attended the meeting.

Zheng Guoguang introduced the role of CMA in IPCC and Beijing Climate Center (BCC)’s work in terms of improving Asian regional climate monitoring, assessment, prediction and capacity building. Zheng said that the Chinese Government paid high attention to climate change response and adaptation and encouraged the development of new energy. CMA offered technological support for relevant data assessment of China. As for the Sino-US meteorological cooperation, Zheng said that the visit of Prof. Mc. Elroy brought many new ideas. He expected the 2 sides to take this opportunity of creating communication channels and deepen the scientific research cooperation.

 

Prof. Mc. Elroy introduced the research outcomes by the School of Engineering and Applied Science/Harvard University on the subject of China’s energy, especially the wind and solar energy resources. He said that the Chinese scientific researcher team gave him a deep impression. The cooperation between CMA and Harvard University in terms of climate would be beneficial for intensifying our capacities of climate change adaptation. He expected the climate experts of the 2 countries to strengthen communication and take joint researches in different forms. He also welcomed the Chinese young meteorological scientists to study in Harvard.

 

Jiao Meiyan expected the 2 sides to implement the cooperation views and establish personnel communication mechanism. Song Lianchun introduced the conditions of BCC. The representatives of the meeting also exchanged views on other relevant issues such as climate change adaptation, talents communication mechanism and etc.

 

Before the meeting, Prof. Mc. Elroy visited CMA National Meteorological Center, National Climate Center and National Satellite Meteorological Center.
