當地時間9月23日，紐約聯合國總部，聯合國氣候行動峰會召開。16歲的瑞典女孩桑伯格（Greta Thunberg）受邀在峰會上發表講話。面對臺下坐著的上百位各國領袖和政府首腦，桑伯格發表了一段充滿激情的控訴——「你們怎敢這樣？如果各位真的了解氣候變化實情但卻仍然不採取行動，那麼你就是邪惡的！「你們怎敢這樣？用空話偷走了我的夢想和童年。所有後代的目光都在注視著你們，如果你們選擇讓我們失望，我們將永遠不會原諒你們。」桑格伯演講的視頻很快被上傳到網絡，稚嫩的面孔配上激情四射的控訴，迅速在社交媒體引發巨大關注。My message is that we'll be watching you?
This is all wrong. I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school, on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you!
You have stolen my dreams and my childhood, with your empty words. And yet I'm one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying.
Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money, and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!
For more than 30 years the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away, and come here saying that you're doing enough when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.
You say you hear us and that you understand the urgency. But no matter how sad and angry I am, I do not want to believe that. Because if you really understood the situation and still kept on failing to act, then you would be evil. And that I refuse to believe.
The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50% chance of staying below 1.5 degrees [Celsius], and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control.
Fifty percent may be acceptable to you. But those numbers do not include tipping points, most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution or the aspects of equity and climate justice. They also rely on my generation sucking hundreds of billions of tons of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist.
So a 50% risk is simply not acceptable to us — we who have to live with the consequences.
To have a 67% chance of staying below a 1.5 degrees global temperature rise — the best odds given by the [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] — the world had 420 gigatons of CO2 left to emit back on Jan. 1, 2018. Today that figure is already down to less than 350 gigatons.
How dare you pretend that this can be solved with just "business as usual" and some technical solutions? With today's emissions levels, that remaining CO2 budget will be entirely gone within less than eight and a half years.
There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures here today, because these numbers are too uncomfortable and you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.
You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you.
We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.

而除了這段慷慨陳詞、聲淚俱下的演講，在一天前，桑伯格還因為「怒目直瞪」「死亡凝視」川普的視頻和照片在網上廣為傳播，成為本屆聯合國大會最受矚目的人物之一。
不過，桑伯格的視頻經網絡傳播後卻引發巨大爭議，評論兩極分化。有人點讚桑伯格對氣候話題的關注，勇於說出自己的心聲；但也有人罵她是「戲精」，不過是被政治操控的傀儡。《紐約郵報》23日刊登美國政治作家裡奇·洛瑞的評論稱，「除了大人教給桑伯格的話以外，她無話可說」。
文章認為，桑伯格演講中認為「大人辜負了我們」的論點站不住腳，實際上在過去的20年中全世界貧困率下降，平均壽命不斷上升，即便氣候有所變化，那也為孩子們提供了一個更好的環境，讓他們能夠解決這一問題。
新聞和評論網站「每日連線」（Daily Wire）的政治記者萊恩·薩韋德拉在推特上表示，這場由「極左運動家」桑伯格帶來的演講，「完全瘋了」。
美國保守新聞網站「聯邦黨人」（The Federalist）記者大衛·哈爾塞尼則認為，有人將桑伯格當做「政治護盾」，給予她廣泛報導，這很「愚蠢」。
今年1月的世界達沃斯經濟論壇上，Greta還在瑞士達沃斯舉行的世界經濟論壇上發表了講話：

回顧桑伯格的成名之路，從來都是伴隨著巨大的爭議聲。桑格伯的外號叫「氣候女孩」，在去年夏天開始為輿論所關注。一年多前，Greta Thunberg還只是普通的瑞典少女，和所有人一樣。從小被老師教導要隨手關燈，節約用水，不要浪費糧食。
有一次，老師給放了一個電影，關於海洋垃圾和氣候變化。氣候的惡劣深深刺痛了Greta的心，深知改變刻不容緩！
她先從自己做起，她成了素食主義者，不買任何多餘的新東西，以求減少碳排放。
2018年，瑞典經歷了262年以來最熱的夏天。
Greta覺得不能再等下去了。
2018年9月瑞典大選之前十幾天，她都不去上學，她每天去國會門口靜坐抗議。
她身邊立著的一塊牌子，上面寫著：為氣候罷課。
她的訴求很簡單：希望瑞典能按照《巴黎氣候協定》減少碳排放量。
巴黎氣候協定是2015年於法國舉辦的氣候峰會，195個國家通過《巴黎氣候協定》，以工業時代前為基準，把全球氣溫增幅控制在至少2攝氏度以內，籤署國必須承諾減少溫室氣體排放。
然而3年過去了，僅有16國做到，這些國家還無一出自歐盟。美國甚至宣布退出巴黎協定。
瑞典大選之後，Greta回去上學，但每周五還是會去國會門口靜坐抗議。
Greta的舉動得到了其他青少年的響應。
2018年，幾萬瑞典學生周五罷課，上街遊行聲援這個「為了未來的周五」（Fridays For The Future）的活動，甚至波及到多個國家。
她的舉動逐漸吸引到了世界舞臺的目光。
