Briefing on Novel Coronavirus Cases 

in Yunnan (Mar. 9, 2020)

Confirmed infections of COVID-19 in Yunnan Province had no increase from 0:00 to 24:00 of March 9, 2020. The province has been free of new confirmed cases for 18 consecutive days.

 

In addition to those cured and discharged from hospital, there still remained 2 confirmed cases in Yunnan. All of the confirmed cases are receiving isolation treatment in designated hospitals. No patient is in severe condition or critically severe condition, and there are 2 death cases in total. 

 

As of 24:00 of March 9, a total of 174 confirmed cases had been reported in Yunnan, among which 170 people had been discharged from hospital after recovery. The specific distribution in the province is as follows:

1. According to the Chinese National Health Commission, on March 9, 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 19 new cases of confirmed infections, 36 new cases of suspected infections, and 17 deaths (all in Hubei). 1,297 patients were released from hospital after being cured. 4,148 people who had had close contact with infected patients were freed from medical observation. Serious cases decreased by 317. On March 9, the Chinese mainland reported 2 new imported confirmed cases from overseas (1 in Beijing and 1 in Guangdong). As of 24:00 of March 9, the Chinese mainland had reported 69 imported confirmed cases. 

As of 24:00 of March 9, the National Health Commission had received 80,754 reports of confirmed cases and 3,136 deaths in 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, and in all 59,897 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 17,721 confirmed cases (including 4,794 in serious condition) and 349 suspected cases. So far, 675,338 people have been identified as having had close contact with infected patients. 16,982 are now under medical observation.

2. According to the latest COVID-19 daily situation report released by WHO on March 9, as of BJT 17:00 of March 9, a total of 28,673 confirmed infections of COVID-19 and 686 deaths were reported in 104 countries and regions outside of China. 3,948 new confirmed cases and 202 new deaths were found in these countries and 3 new countries/territories/areas (Bangladesh, Albania and Paraguay) reported cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

3. On March 8, the Chinese Foreign Ministry established an emergency response center to well coordinate the efforts related to foreign affairs to fight the epidemic and contain the importing of COVID-19 cases from overseas.4. On March 9, in response to US Secretary of State Pompeo's calling the novel coronavirus as "the Wuhan coronavirus", the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that despite the fact that WHO has officially named the novel type of coronavirus, certain American politicians, disrespecting science and the WHO decision, jumped at the first chance to stigmatize China and Wuhan with it. China condemns this despicable practice.5. Zhong Nanshan, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said at an expert symposium on epidemic prevention and control in Guangdong Province that the global outbreak of COVID-19 is expected to last at least until this coming June and the focus of China’s fight will shift toward preventing the imported infections in the months to come.
