China (or the CCP) places its legitimacy on being unified as a nation because disunity equals weakness. It goes against China's historical basis of existence since the whole concept of 'nation' to China is a rather new one. The consequence of this is ethnic diversity gets shoved aside and a cultural monolith is then established and its usually minorities who bear the brunt of this.

story: one day One of Confucius's student 子貢 asked Confucius among two other of his students 師 and 商 who is better. And Confucius replied 師 never meets the required standard when he does things while 商 always do way more than he should. They are both as bad.
