大家對於」報喜不報憂「的翻譯，更多地還是參考了《漢英大詞典(第三版)》的譯文——強調what is good and what is bad。在陸谷孫主編的《中華漢英大詞典》裡，譯文也類似：to report the good news but supress the bad. 都過於貼近漢語的字面意思。不過，如果我們反過來思考一下，在類似的情況下，英文會怎麼表達呢？在下面的三個例句中，並沒有在句子形式上強調good news 和bad news，而是突出其中一個方面：
Major Hoess accepts no optimistic reports of subordinates.
霍斯少校不喜歡下級報喜不報憂.
Every time he calls home, he tells the good news but never mentions the bad.
他給家裡打電話總是報喜不報憂.
The official media, often reticent about reporting bad news, rapidly updated casualty numbers.
通常對報喜不報憂的官方媒體迅速更新了死亡數字.
上述三個句子使用了hypestatement的手法，更突顯出」喜「的一面。
對於」可憐天下父母心「的翻譯，陸谷孫主編的《中華漢英大詞典》則側重於其意思的外化，即將」父母心「的理解轉變成」心變軟「（soft）：all parents go soft when it comes to their children.
同樣，我們換用英語思維來看這句中文，則讓人眼前一亮：
To be appreciated as a parent is quite unusual.
可憐天下父母心。
But parents are parents.
可憐天下父母心.
英文的表達無中文之形，卻達中文之意。
