Germaine Acogny有著"非洲現代舞之母"之稱的塞內加爾舞者，為世界各地的人們教授和表演舞蹈技藝，傳播非洲獨特的舞蹈文化。
阿考妮18 歲時去法國學習最前沿的歐洲現代舞技，並不斷融入非洲傳統舞蹈的元素。她認為只有這樣才能使自己在歐洲獨樹一幟，得到白人世界的承認。1968 年，已經在歐洲舞臺上備獲肯定的阿考妮回到塞內加爾，籌建了非洲歷史上第一所現代舞學校"L'ecole de Acogny"。阿考妮說:"從非洲大陸走向世界的所有舞蹈家，都是由這個學校培養的。"阿考妮也由此被冠以"非洲現代舞之母"的稱號。
1982 年對於阿考妮來說是一個特殊的年份。她的"Mudra Afrique"舞校陷入經營困境而倒閉，她不得不終止教學生涯，開始奔波於世界各地。也是在那一年， 阿考妮受中國政府邀請來中國表演。
1990 年，阿考妮在丈夫的幫助下， 創建了"Afrique en Creations"舞蹈比賽。現在，非洲現代舞在普通人中越來越流行。阿考妮說:"現代舞對於非洲傳統舞。
蹈來說缺乏原始性，要讓非洲人接受比較困難。但自從年我們創辦了這項賽事之後，非洲人便像火山爆發一樣，瘋狂地愛上了現代舞。經過我和同行們的努力，現代舞在非洲就像大樹有了根，肢體語言越來越豐富，就像樹枝越來越茂盛。"
現在，歐洲人開始主動去非洲尋找優秀的舞蹈家，這使許多非洲人的生活得到改善。阿考妮說:"對一個舞蹈家來說， 舞臺生命是極其短暫的，但作為一名舞者， 她可以一直跳到老，我想我會跳到80 歲。"
