《新概念英語點津系列輔導叢書》重磅推出!
英語中有關「看(look)」的單詞和短語表達非常之多,今天我們就跟著Kate Woodford老師來梳理梳理相關的各種表達。
為了便於大家參考,我們將分兩次跟大家分享:第一次分享有關「仔細看」的表達,第二次分享有關「隨意看」的表達。
今天就先來看看「仔細看(look carefully)」的常見表達。
1)If you inspect something, you look at it carefully in order to find out information (為了搜查信息而「檢閱」):
She got out of the car and inspected it for damage. (她下車檢查車子哪裡損壞了。)
You might also inspect something at work by looking carefully at it to find out if the quality is good enough(「檢查」產品的質量).
2)The verb examine is similar. A doctor examines a patient when they look carefully at their body to find out whether they are well(醫生「檢查」病人的身體狀況). 'Examine' is also used outside of a medical context, meaning 'to look carefully in order to find out information'(「調查」信息):
Investigators are examining the wreckage to determine the cause of the crash. (調查員在調查殘骸,以確定事故的起因。)He leaned over and examined the front wheel of his bike. (他彎下身子檢查自行車的前輪。)
3)If you peer, you also look carefully, but this time because something is hard to see(為了看清楚而「端詳;凝視」):
'How deep is it?' she asked, peering into the hole. (她盯著洞穴問道:「這洞有多深?」)
4)To survey, again, is to look carefully, but this verb is usually used of large areas(「查勘」,一般用於查看比較大範圍的區域):
We sat at the back, surveying the room. (我們坐在房間後面,環視整個房間。)
5)If you scan something (again, often a large area), you look carefully for a particular thing(「審視」,一般指為了尋找特定的事物而查看較大範圍的區域):
She scanned the crowd, hoping to see his face. (她掃視了人群,希望看到他。)We scanned the horizon for any sign of a boat. (我們盯著地平線,希望有船隻出現。)
英語中也有表示「長時間看(looking for a long time at the same thing)」的各種表達。
1)Stare(盯著看;凝視)is the most common verb for this.
Don't stare at people, honey – it's rude! (親愛的,不要盯著別人看!這很不禮貌!)He sat on the rock, staring into the distance. (他坐在巖石上,凝視著遠方。)
2)Two informal verbs that mean 'stare in a stupid or rude way' are gawk and (UK) gawp(呆呆地看著;直瞪瞪地注視):
No one did anything to help. They just sat there, gawking at me! (沒人幫忙。他們就幹坐著,傻瞪著我看!)
3)The verb gaze also means 'to look for a long time', but it is more positive in its associations. You usually gaze at someone or something attractive or someone that you love(「注視;凝視」著美好的或喜愛的人或物):
I caught her gazing at a baby at the table next to us. (我發現她一直注視著我們鄰桌的孩子。)
You also gaze when you are thinking about something else(若有所思地「凝視;注視」):
He spends ages gazing out of the window when he should be working. (他原本該幹活的,但他卻長時間地盯著窗外看。)
4)A phrase used in this area is can't take your eyes off. If you can't take your eyes offsomeone or something, you cannot stop looking at them, often because they are very attractive(長時間盯著某人或某物看):
He can't take his eyes off you! (他就是忍不住要一直盯著你看!)
後面我將繼續跟大家分享英語裡「隨意看」的各種表達,盡情關注!
