英語中有很多單詞可以表示「牛」，
那麼「牛年」「屬牛」的「牛」
到底應該用哪個呢？
今天小北老師就跟大家聊聊英語中的各種牛~
美 /ɑks/ 英 /ks/
指閹割過的公牛（即常用於幹農活的閹牛），也可以用來通稱牛，複數形式是oxen。因此「牛年」可以說：Year of the Ox
學習兩個固定搭配：
as strong as an ox
體健如牛的
The black ox has trod on sb.'s foot.
①災禍已降臨到某人頭上。
②某人已人老珠黃。
美 /bʊl/ 英 /bʊl/
是未閹割的公牛，亦指其他雄性動物。西班牙盛行的「鬥牛」就是bullfight，而「鬥牛士」是bullfighter。
我們常說的「牛市」（多頭市場）就是bull market；而「熊市」（空頭市場）則是bear market。之所以選擇這兩種動物，一種說法是在西方古代文明中，牛代表力量、財務和希望，熊則代表抑制狂熱、消化自身、見機重生。
漢語中有「吹牛」一詞，在英語裡就可以用bull，表示「假話，瞎話；胡說」。
People are saying that he stole the money, but that's a bunch of bull.
人們都說他偷了那筆錢，其實那純屬胡說。
bull還更多用於一些比喻意義，比如：
take the bull by the horns 挺身面對困難
We decided to take the bull by the horns and go to court, instead of paying the fine.
我們決定勇敢地上法庭，而不交罰金。
like a bull in a china shop 笨手笨腳到處闖禍；魯莽闖禍
The Senator may have a reputation on Capitol Hill as a bull in a china shop, but the voters love him.
這名參議員在國會可能有著莽撞的名聲，但是選民們就是喜愛他。
美 /kaʊ/ 英 /kaʊ/
指母牛、奶牛，或大型雌性動物（如象或鯨象、鯨、海豹等）。
a herd of cows 一群母牛
milk the cows 擠牛奶
cow也有一些特殊的搭配用法：
have a cow 非常生氣［吃驚］
Pat had a cow because you didn't tell her about the party.
帕特非常惱火，因為你沒有告訴她有關聚會的事。
till the cows come home 長時間地；無限期地；永遠
They stay up and play cards till the cows come home.
他們一夜未睡，玩了很長時間的牌。
Dissidents were cowed into silence by the army.
持不同政見者在軍隊的恐嚇下保持沉默。
美 /'kæt̮l/ 英 /'kætl/
指菜牛或奶牛，本身就是複數名詞，一群牛可以說「a herd of cattle」；而養牛的牧場可以說「a cattle ranch」。
beef/dairy cattle 肉／奶牛
美 /kæf/ 英 /kɑːf/
指小牛、牛犢，也可以指大型動物的仔、幼獸。母牛懷孕可以說a cow in/with calf。
kill the fatted calf 設宴慶祝（或歡迎）；給予款待
說完牛，我們再來說說牛肉。一般成年牛的肉用beef，比如：
beefsteak 牛排
noodles with beef 牛肉麵
beef jerky 牛肉乾
beef extract 牛肉汁
corned beef 醃牛肉
不過小牛（calf）的肉則用veal。
