這是副校長面試的最後一輪。我被召進了董事會,那裡坐著兩位董事,三位校長,還有人力資源副總監。
情景表演立刻開始。一位氣急敗壞的家長(向學校)提出諸多要求;據說是被我激怒了—因為學生打架問題,我剛停了他們孩子的學;現在我進入了解決問題的模式:平息怒火,構建融洽。
情景表演結束,面試提問開始;整個過程大約持續了一個小時。
面試結束後我就回家了。是的,我正在面試當地一所高中的副校長職位。
在我到家之前,人力資源部助理主管就打來電話說,第二天早上我會面見校長和校董會。我欣喜若狂,那晚我幾乎徹夜難眠。

10 BE THE ONE WHO WILL NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER
It was the final round of a vice principal interview. l got called into the boardroom where there were two directors, three principals, and the assistant superintendent of human resources. The role playing began immediately. An extremely upset parent demanded many things. I had just suspended their child for fighting and supposedly it was provoked. I went into problem solving mode and calmed the parent down and began to build rapport. The role play came to an end, and the interview questions began. The interview lasted about an hour, then I headed home. I was interviewing for a vice principal position of a local high school.
Before I made it home, the assistant superintendent of human resources called and let me know that I would be meeting with the superintendent and the cabinet the next morning. I was over the moon excited, and I could barely sleep that night. The interview came, and I walked into a large room that had a large desk on one side, and on the other side were a few couches and chairs. The superintendent and the cabinet began their questioning. About halfway through the interview, the superintend paused and asked if they could be honest with me. I responded, "Of course." He started with 「 Ryan, I’m going to be honest. You are a physical education teacher. And I don’t view PE teachers as instructional leaders." I made my case against it, but I was definitely shocked at what they had said. The interview wrapped up, and I headed home. I couldn't shake the feeling of having been treated like that.
Later that night, I got the call that the position had gone to someone else. Although it didn’t surprise me, I still was not happy. It hurt. I had done so many different things to show everyone l was an instructional leader, and still the superintendent felt that because of the subject I taught, I was not an instructional leader.
I knew I had to do something different. I was given the answer of no, but I was not going to stop short of my dreams. I decided that if the leader of that district felt certain subject matter teachers could not be instructional leaders, then I didn't want to work in that environment. I wanted to work in a place that valued all their kids and all their staff, no matter their background. I decided to leave the district and take an administrator position in a district that valued all their people.
I challenge you to remember who you are and how you become who you are-and never take no for an answer on your dreams.
