1、garbage與rubbish的區別
①「垃圾」在美國、加拿大等美語國家是garbage，在英國是rubbish。這兩個詞還可以用來比喻沒有價值的東西或事情、瞎話或者是廢話。
例如：
She was talking rubbish in the meeting.
她在會上的發言都是廢話。
The store is full of useless rubbish.
這個店裡賣的全是沒有用的破爛。
His story is total rubbish; I don’t believe any of it.
他的故事都是瞎說，我一點兒都不信。
②Rubbish的詞性比garbage要多一些，它除了可以當名詞之外，還可以作為動詞，意思是「強烈地批評，把什麼東西或想法說成一文不值」。
例如：
I don’t understand why everyone keeps rubbishing my idea?
我不明白為什麼每個人都覺得我的想法一文不值？
rubbish 作為形容詞，意思就是「不會，沒有能力做某件事情」
I’m rubbish at playing computer games.
我對電子遊戲一竅不通。
My best friend is a rubbish singer.
我的好朋友根本就不會唱歌。
2、Trash
①Trash可以用來指「不值得尊重的人」，是非正式用語。
例如：
I don’t believe my brother dated Joanne, she’s trash.
我真不敢相信我的哥哥竟然曾經和Joanne 交往過，她簡直就是垃圾。
②當trash被作為動詞使用的時候，是非正式用語，表示「扔棄、丟棄」或者「嚴重損壞、拆毀」或者「猛烈批評」。
例如：
I try to trash all junk mail as soon as I receive it.
我準備一收到垃圾來信就馬上扔掉。
There was a fight in the night club and the place was trashed.
夜總會裡發生了毆打，結果整個地方被砸得稀巴爛。
My latest idea was totally trashed by my manager.
我最新的想法被我老闆批得一文不值。
3、Waste
①Waste作為名詞的時候，它是一個正式用語，最常用的意思是「沒有利用價值的東西，包括廢品、垃圾、廢物、廢料」或者指「時間、金錢、精力等的浪費」。
例如：
The amount of waste we produce in the house every year is astonishing.
我們一家一年所產生的垃圾簡直令人不可思議。
The factory dumped its chemical waste into the river and it’s now been shut down.
工廠把化學廢料直接倒進河裡，現在工廠被關掉了。
Don’t watch this film. It’s a complete waste of time.
千萬別看這部電影，這會是浪費時間。
②Waste作為動詞時的常用意思是 「因為沒有合理應用而造成浪費」。
例如：
I don’t want to waste my time on this.
我不想為這事兒浪費我的時間。
You are wasting a lot of water by having a bath instead of a shower.
你泡浴缸會比洗淋浴浪費很多水。
garbage是垃圾的美式英語說法；rubbish是英式英語垃圾的意思；trash也是美式英語垃圾的意思，但是它也可以用來指不值得尊重的人；waste是一個正式用語指沒有利用價值的東西或是浪費。
