最近有同學問到了一個問題：
She has two sweaters; one is red and ____ is white. 這裡應該填another還是the other?這裡涉及到another/the other用法的區別，這也是很容易弄混的一個知識點。在回答問題之前我們可以先回顧一下another/other/the other/others/the others這幾個詞的用法。
(1) another
another可以作為限定詞以及代詞使用。當它作為限定詞時，後面要接可數名詞單數，例如：We can fit another person in my car. 我車裡還可以再坐一個人。但如果another後面的複數名詞前面有明確的數目，也可以放在another後面，比如：another fifty miles 再有五十英裡。
當another作為限定詞使用時，它可以表示除了原有的一個或多個之外，再加上又一個，也可以表示不要原有的一個或多個，換成另外一個。單詞具體取哪個含義要根據語境來判斷。比如：
Those cakes are wonderful. Could I have another one?
這句話應該理解為「蛋糕好吃極了。我可以再來一塊嗎？」這裡another的含義是「額外的」。又比如：
I think we should paint it another colour.
這句話的意思是「我覺得咱們應該把它漆成別的一個顏色」，這裡another表示「另外一個」（alternative）。
another也可以作為代詞使用，比如：
MPs have one free trip to Brussels and another to Strasbourg, headquarters of the EC, each year. 議員每年可免費去布魯塞爾和歐洲委員會總部斯特拉斯堡旅行一次。
(2) other / others
other同樣可以作為限定詞以及代詞使用。當other作為限定詞使用時，單詞後面必須接不可數名詞或者名詞複數。比如：This sweater is too big. Do you have it in other sizes?
如果other後面要接可數名詞單數，那麼other前面必須要有其他限定詞來修飾（比如the/some/any/my/your）。舉個例子：Saudi Arabia produces more oil than any other country. 沙烏地阿拉伯的石油產量比其他任何國家都要高。這裡other前面的any就是一個限定詞。
other也可以作為代詞使用，此時它的複數形式是others，比如：
Some writers are greater than others. 一些作家比另一些作家更偉大。
(3) the other
當the other作為限定詞與可數名詞單數搭配時，它表示兩個人或事物中的第二個（the second of two people or things）。比如：
I've found one earring - do you know where the other one is?
我們知道耳環一共有兩隻，主人公已經找到一隻了，剩下的另一隻已經是確定了的，所以要用the other來指代。
當the other與名詞複數搭配時，它表示群體中其餘的人或事物（the remaining people or things in a group），比如：
Joel and Karen are here, but where are the other kids?
在語境中主人公將所有的小孩看成是一個整體，the other kids指的是整體中除Joel和Karen之外的其他小孩。
the other也可以作為代詞使用，此時它指的是兩個人或事物中的第二個。比如：
He had his hat in one hand and a bunch of flowers in the other.
主人公其中一隻手已經拿了帽子，the other即指的是另一隻拿花的手。
(4) the others
the others表示「群體中其餘的人或事物」（When you are talking about several people or things and have already referred to one or more of them, you usually refer to the remaining ones as the others.）舉個例子：
She gave me one book last week and promised to bring the others on Wednesday.
這裡主人公將所有的書看成一個整體，the others指除了第一本書外的其他書籍，句子理解為「上周她給了我一本書，並答應周三把其他的書帶來。」
這個句子也相當於：
She gave me one book last week and promised to bring the other books on Wednesday.
由上面的分析可知，文章開頭的問題：She has two sweaters; one is red and ____ is white. 這裡空格處應該填the other，用來特指兩件毛衣中白色的那件。
BBC中也有一個類似的句子：
When two objects are rubbed together, electrons are transferred from one object to the other. One object becomes positive and the other negative.She has two sweaters; one is red and ____ is white. 這裡不能填another，因為它是泛指。如果作者沒有指明是哪一個對象，就可以用another，比如朗文詞典中有這樣的例句：
Why does my card work in one cash machine and not in another?
句子的意思是「為什麼我的磁卡在一臺提款機上可以使用，但在另一臺上卻不能呢？」這裡究竟是哪一臺機器不能識別，作者沒有明確指出，因此應該用another來指代。
