2 READING IN LAYERS 分層閱讀
Layer 1: Skimming and Scanning 第一層:略讀和瀏覽
Skim: Title, subheadings, graphs, figures
略讀:標題,小標題,表格,圖。
Scan: Abstract, introduction, conclusion, first paragraph of each major section.
瀏覽:摘要,序言,結論,每一個主要部分的第一段。
Abstract & Introduction 摘要和序言
論點或研究問題是什麼?
▪ What’s the gap orniche in the currentfield that the studyis filling oraddressing?該研究填補了當前領域的哪些空白?或者發現了哪些有待解決的問題?
▪ What’s thesignificance ofthe presentresearch?本研究的意義是什麼?
Conclusion 結論
▪ What are the main findings?
▪ How do the main findings solve the research problem?
▪ What is the implication or relevance of the findings?

Layer 2: Meso-level reading
第二層:中觀層次閱讀
[所謂Meso-level中觀,就是介於Macro宏觀和Micro微觀之間的層次]
▪ Reading forstructure and main ideas toanalyze rhetoricalstructure and thesis;
以分析修辭結構和論點為目的,讀文章結構和主要觀點;▪ Reading formain support toevaluatestrength of argument andevidence;
▪ Reading for main significance andrelevance tounderstand how thetext matters at thetime of writing andtoday.
以了解文本在被寫作時和現在這兩個時段的重要性為目的,讀其重要性和相關性。Layer 3: In-Depth reading 第三層:深層閱讀
▪ Reading toanalyze the nuance in thewriter’s argument;
通過閱讀來分析作者論點中的細微差別(或者是微妙之處);▪ Reading torespond to thewriter’sargument;

When do I read fully in depth (Layer 3) 什麼時候需要深層閱讀?

這一部分是Barb這門課程每周要交的閱讀總結,可以作為自己閱讀筆記的參考。▪A summary of the readings, focusing on core contributions to the history of archaeological thought.
▪A discussion of how these readings related to or inform your own planned dissertation research.
討論這些閱讀材料如何關聯或者影響你自己計劃的論文研究。▪ A list of terms and concepts you would like to discuss in seminar.
▪ At least three questions for seminar discussion.
分層閱讀主要還是適用於人文社科類的文獻,如果是涉及自科的研究,比如對考古材料的科技分析之類的文章,行文結構其實和社科是不太一樣的(我個人認為結構性更強,而且大多都是Introduction- Context/background- Sample- Method- Result- Conclusion/discussion 這樣的順序,一目了然)。我翻到了上學期Matthew教的讀Case study的方法,可做參考:How to read case studies 如何閱讀個案研究

作者如何用分析結果來支持ta的論據,並回答研究問題?最後給大家康康Barb給我們設計的每周閱讀進度表,雖然我有自知之明,知道自己肯定沒法按計劃完成,但是能碰到這樣貼心的老師,願意思考學生的學習需求並給我們提供幫助,我覺得是非常幸運的事情。
