本文是《英語詞彙專題系列》第20篇。
在本系列第9篇《有關貓咪的俗語》裡，我提到：「眾所周知，動物和我們的生活息息相關，這也體現到我們的語言當中，因此不論在什麼語言裡都有與動物相關的表達，英語也不例外，尤其是那些生活中比較常見的動物。」，並介紹了一些與貓咪相關的俗語。在本系列第12篇裡，我又簡單總結了與小馬(horse)相關的idioms。明天將是狗年的最後一天了，讓我來簡單介紹幾個與狗狗相關的俗語吧。
1. Hair of the dog
這個俗語我在《英語詞彙專題系列》第15篇《有關頭髮的俗語》裡面有介紹。這裡摘錄一下，大家別忘了複習喲，舉一反三學得才牢固。
這個俗語字面上翻譯為「狗毛」，其實是指「a drink of liquor, supposed to relieve a hangover」，也就是「醒酒湯」。它是「a hair of the dog that bit you」的縮略，後者來自於一種迷信，認為被狗咬過的人，如果喝掉用這隻狗的狗毛做成的藥劑，就不會得狂犬病。
2. Cats and dogs
這個俗語我在《英語詞彙專題系列》第9篇《有關貓咪的俗語》裡面有介紹。這裡也摘錄一下。
Cats and dogs指的是「雨下得很大」，比如：
It’s raining cats and dogs.
3. Lead a dog’s life
這句俗語的意思是「to have an unhappy or harassed existence」，在英語裡的表達和漢語驚人的相似，也就是「活得像狗一樣」。大家肯定都記得在大話西遊的結尾，城牆上抱得美人歸的俠客看著至尊寶落魄的背影說：「他好像一條狗啊。」
給大家看一個例句：
He complains that he led a dog's life in the army.
4. let sleeping dogs lie
表面上看來，這句話是指「就讓熟睡的狗繼續趴著吧」，注意這裡的 lie是「躺」（狗的話就應該是「趴著」）而不是「撒謊」的意思，引申出來的意思是「avoid interfering in a situation that is currently causing no problems but may well do so as a result of such interference.」，簡單來講就是「睜一隻眼閉一隻眼」的意思，比如
5. Dog it
這句俗語有兩個主要意思：
a) to shirk one's responsibility; loaf on the job，也就是「尸位素餐」的意思，比如：
Don’t dog it when you have a job to finish.
耐克（Nike）的著名廣告語（slogan）是Just do it，所以有人就調侃說「just dog it」，就像下面這個T恤一樣。
b) to retreat, flee, renege，也就是「逃離，跑路」的意思，這時候，「dog it」和「beat it」的意思是一樣的。麥可傑克遜就有一首著名的歌曲叫做「beat it」，比如：
A sponsor dogged it when he was needed most.
6. go to the dogs
意思是「to deteriorate; degenerate morally or physically」，也就是「破落，沒落」的意思，比如：
This neighborhood is going to the dogs.
明天就要過年了，希望大家適當飲酒，不要喝到第二天需要痛苦地用「hair of the dog」來解酒。在新的一年裡工作勤勤懇懇，不要「dog it」，你就不會「lead a dog’s life」了。大家新年快樂！
