Hellloooooo and welcome to another awesome episode of hewaiguoren shuo yingyu.
Today we’re going to learn a really funny but super common expression in England. So everybody here says Bob’s your uncle, Bob’s your uncle.
Actually no, they say it like this. Bob’s your uncle. Bob’s your uncle yeah.
And the first time I heard it, I thought - no Bob’s not my uncle, my uncle’s name is Dave. Literally, actually, both of my uncles are named Dave. Dave 1 and Dave 2 I call em. Dave 1, did you tell Dave 2 to move the car?
Seriously, I’m not kidding!
Now, what does it mean - Bob’s your uncle?
Well, Bob is an english name, it’s short for Robert.
His name is Robert, but people call him Bob.
Your uncle - as in mother’s brother or your father’s brother, that’s your uncle.
And then you get, Bob’s your uncle
So Bob’s your uncle is a really easy way to say there you go, there you have it, that’s it. For example in America we usually say easy as pie and that means oh so easy or there you go, that’s it.
It’s the same thing with this British expression Bob’s your uncle.
So you can use this expression whenever you’re trying to explain that something is easy to do or whenever you’re telling someone how to do something.
Now, I use it like this:
Oh, you’re looking for the shopping mall? Well, you just have to continue straight, then turn left and Bob’s your uncle.
Or
It’s really easy to bake a cake, you just mix everything together, throw it in the oven and Bob’s your uncle.
Or I told my friend to post my podcast on her wechat moments, and I showed her how to do it, you just click here, open that, click yes and there you go, Bob’s your uncle.
My podcast is now on your moments.
Here’s a quick dialog
Simon: I finally learnt how to use the voice recorder on my phone.
Gina: Wow, it only took you like ten years to figure it out Simon.
Simon: That hurts my feelings.
Gina: Whatever, show me how it works.
Simon: You just click this button here, and you talk into it like this … blah blah blabitty bla and …. See. So easy! Bob’s your uncle ;)
Okay, all right, thanks Simon.
He taught us how to use the voice recorder, like we didn’t know how to do it already.
So some final examples
Don’t worry Jane, you can easily do it if you try hard and then Bob's your uncle.
Alan, I’m telling you, it’s all gonna work out in the end. Trust me, Bob’s your uncle.
Whoa! Are you kidding? Time’s up already?
