「念英文故事書」這幾個字，簡直就像一顆手榴彈。每次我一提出來，總覺得聽到的父母們，就會直覺地馬上往後跳了三步遠，好像它會爆炸似的。但很奇怪的是，父母卻不會馬上逃走，而是存著戒心地遠遠望著我，問道：
「我的英文很差，要怎麼幫孩子念？」
「我的發音不是很標準，可以念嗎？」
如果你以為那些英文還不錯、明明可以勝任的父母就不會有這樣的想法，那可就大錯特錯了。我認識一對夫婦好友，兩人都有美國碩士學歷，要不是我不厭其煩、苦口婆心勸說，外加故事書都提到了他們家門口，另一個愛聽英文故事的孩子，可能也不會出現。
「孩子聽得懂英文嗎？」通常是媽媽們先被說服，一旦回家開始實行，爸爸就會發出這樣的疑問。
說到這兒，我就不得不勸勸爸爸們：「不能幫忙也就算了，但總該在旁邊打打氣吧，怎麼光說些惹人厭的話呢？」如果你是英文能力比媽媽好的爸爸，請嘗試一下，媽媽念中文故事書，英文的就由你來念。
英文故事書，我是怎麼念給孩子聽的呢？
一句英文一句中文
就像自己是一名英文同聲傳譯員，有人說了一句英文，馬上將之翻譯成中文說出來，只是這兩個角色都是由自己擔任而已。例如——
英文：Danny isin a hurry。
中文：Danny 走得好匆忙。
英文：「I am sixyears old today。」Danny said。
中文：Danny 說：「我今年六歲了。」
英文完全照書念
英文部分照書念，維持原汁原味。當然英文能力很好、不怕教錯孩子的父母，不在此限。
中文翻譯要自然、口語化，不用拘泥於逐詞翻譯
中文翻譯的部分，就是當你念完了英文之後，腦子裡出現什麼樣的中文意思，就將這個意思說出來。其實這就像我們幫很小的孩子念中文故事書時，通常不會照本宣科，而是看完文字後再用自己的口語說出來，是一樣的道理。
另一個很重要的原則是，不要拘泥於英文單詞的逐詞翻譯，先了解整句的意思，再用中文說出來就好。多翻譯了一個詞或少翻譯了一個詞都不要緊，只要全句的意思沒錯就好，倒是說得自然、口語化還比較重要。別讓孩子疑惑，爸媽怎麼普通話說得怪怪的，像是用外國人的語言邏輯在說話。
例如前面那句 「『I am six years old today.』Danny said. 」就有媽媽問到「Danny said」，翻譯時是應該像我們說中文的方式，放在句子的前面，還是照英文原文放在後面呢？我會說當然是放在前面，因為這才是我們日常生活中說話的樣子啊。
如果連翻譯的中文部分都說得彆扭、不好聽，對孩子來說，尤其是在念英文故事書的起步階段，父母可能要花更多的力氣，才能吸引孩子專心聆聽。
除非孩子問問題，否則不要自行加上中文解釋
除非孩子主動問問題，不然，一句英文一句中文，接著就換下一句。儘量不要在中文翻譯之後，又自行加上一大堆的國語解釋。
我直覺來猜想，一句英文一句中文的方式，經過大量閱讀和比對之後，孩子自然就會習得第二種語言。然而，如果我們在翻譯之後，又自行加了與原文無關的字眼，孩子可能就無法正確比對中英文的關係，或是聲音與繪圖的關係，也可能減低了這個方法的效果。
例外的情況是，如果你的孩子比較大了，太簡單的故事已經無法產生吸引力，中文的翻譯工作就必須更用心、花更多力氣。例如，你可以提高音調，配合動作，甚至就著書上的繪圖，天馬行空地發揮：「咦！你看這隻臭鼠，放的屁好臭好臭，敵人就不敢靠近它了。」「你看這隻小狗好大的膽子，竟敢對著大熊『汪汪』叫。」
一開始，以能「延長孩子聽故事的時間」為原則，不管父母是希望孩子愛上中文故事書，還是英文故事書，都一樣適用。
