The three-cornered policy of the Guangdong Air Force included suppressing Communist insurgents, resisting foreign aggression and overthrowing dictatorship. In late September, the flying partner of the late Eddie Deed’s, Harry Claiborne, arrived to carry on the mission, and the base began training exercises to ready itself for 「Double Ten,」 the Anniversary of the Chinese Republic, so-called because the date fell on the tenth day of the tenth month.
Actually, 20 September was declared Guangdong Aviation Day and was decided for the airshow over the aerodrome at Shou Gou Ling. The date was chosen out of sentiment; it was the day that Yang Xianyi, now considered the Father of Chinese Aviation, had died in action. But due to 「inadequate preparation」, the fly-over was postponed to the Double Ten. When the day of celebrations finally arrived, the air was filled with the mighty hum of massed flying machines as the new Curtiss Hawks joined the squadrons』 other fighting aircraft—Vought, Armstrong-Whitworth 16s, Douglas and 9 locally built Yangchengs—in a mighty formation of forty-two aircraft. Also aloft were twelve trainer planes that, in a show of no-hard-feelings solidarity, had been sent from the now-allied province of Guangxi. As part of the celebration, proud Guangdong school children presented the base with a gun-equipped bomber they had purchased with money raised by subscription.
In the late 1930s, tension was developing throughout the world, it seemed as war would break out soon. Some Chinese women defied gender perceptions by becoming pilots. One famous female pilot was Li Xiaqing. Li was a renowned film actress of the time, popularly known as Li Dandan. Li Xiaqing was born in 1912 to wealth and privilege in Guangdong, and in 1933, she attended a Paris airshow and was deeply thrilled by the aerobatic performance. In 1933, Li took flying lessons in Tiger-Moth at Geneva’s Cointrin-Ecoled Aviation and became the first woman to earn a pilot’s license in Geneva. In November 1935, Li won her wings and became the first woman to graduate from the Boeing School of Aerobatics, Oakland, CA. During 1938-1945, Li devoted to her motherland conducting good-will flying missions throughout North, Central, and South America. Li was given the titles by the people as China’s First Woman of the Air, the Legendary Aviatrix because of her fascinating personality, her persistent dream of flying, and above all, her overwhelming sense of patriotism and her duty to the country.
