Overview
This course 「Medical Terminology Step by Step」 is designed to help students master medical vocabulary effectively and efficiently by learning the building rules of medical terms.
Most medical terms are made up of three parts: prefix, root and suffix. The prefix is the word part that comes before a word and reveals information such as position, number or color. The root is the core and basic part of a medical term, which indicates the body part or organ that is concerned. The suffix comes after the root and contributes to meanings such as pathological condition, surgical procedures, laboratory tests and so on. Thus, medical terms that may at first seem very complex can be broken down into simple component parts to give students a basic idea of their meaning.
This course includes one introductory chapter and 11 specific chapters. These 11 chapters are Musculoskeletal System, Integumentary System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Cardiovascular and Lymphatic Systems, Nervous System, the Eye and the Ear, Urinary System, Endocrine System, Reproductive System and Obstetrics and Neonatology. Each chapter is composed of five parts: an introduction to the system/organ, the anatomical terms and their definitions, the diagnostic terms related to the system, the surgical terms related to the system as well as additional terms. Each chapter ends with a related cultural story for fun.
It is true that studying complicated medical terms would turn out to be quite boring and abstract without pictures of organs, procedures or cases. Here we want to extend our sincere appreciations to the photographers whose pictures used in this course make it more vivid and easier to understand.
