中國西北部的甘肅省是絲綢之路上一個主要的地方。那裡夏天的氣溫高達四十度，比勞倫斯珍妮佛還熱。那裡氣候乾燥，唇膏也無法避免乾裂的嘴唇。如果你想摸摸地上的沙子，就一定要帶上手套，否則沙子會燙傷你的手指。敦煌是瀕危動物的家，那裡有普氏野馬和野生雙峰駝。
在1945年時，只有28匹普氏野馬存活。因為保護措施好，現存的普氏野馬達到3000多匹。普氏野馬是真正「野生」的，而其他的馬都是由被馴化過的馬繁衍而來的。野生雙峰駱駝，存活的數量更少，現在全世界僅存大約1000峰。敦煌很重視保護它們，這對普氏野馬和野生雙峰駝來說是很幸運的。敦煌有沙漠中的綠洲，有湖泊，有樹木還有綠色植被。
