12月7日，美國《時代周刊》揭曉了「2016年度人物」（Person of the Year），候任美國總統的唐納·川普成功當選。
《時代周刊》對其的評語是：

美利堅分裂國總統
在《時代周刊》這期年度人物特刊封面中，川普坐在一把低調奢華的靠背椅上，轉身凝視鏡頭，頭頂時代二字，仿佛一切已大局在握。
《時代周刊》給出了如下一段深奧的評選理由，引人思考：
For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year.

對於當選《時代》年度人物，川普本人表示十分榮幸：
「To be on the cover of Time as Person of the Year is a tremendous honor. 」
登上《時代周刊》年度人物的封面對我是莫大的榮幸。
但對於「分裂國總統」這一稱號，他表示不能接受：
Well I think putting divided is snarky. But again it’s divided, I'm not president yet. I didn't do anything to divide.
不過我覺得分裂的說法有點尖刻。不過確實美國是分裂的，但我還不是總統呢，我又沒做任何分裂國家的事。
「I mean there’s a lot of division, and we’re going to put it back together and we’re going to have a country that’s very well healed.」
我是說現在確實存在很多分歧，但我們要把國家重新團結起來，讓它完全癒合。
這已經不是川普第一次登上《時代》封面了。他第一次上封面是1989年。
光是2016年，川普就上了好幾次封面，至於文章內容，正面負面都有。
今年1月的一期封面報導就深得川普心。他在推特上說：
「Time Magazine has me on the cover this week. David Von Drehle has written one of the best stories I have ever had.」
《時代周刊》這周讓我上封面了。David Von Drehle寫的這篇報導是關於我的最佳報導。
但是今年8月和10月的兩期封面都沒有那麼好看了。
In August, Time featured an illustrated likeness of him melting down, as rumors swirled that his campaign was faltering; two months later, it revisited that image to show him in full meltdown.

我都說了《時代周刊》肯定不會選我當年度人物，雖然我是最受歡迎的人。他們選了一個毀滅德國的人。
2013年，他評價說《時代周刊》選出的100名最具影響力人物是個「玩笑」（joke），並且預祝《時代周刊》早日倒閉。
《時代周刊》的100名最具影響力人物名單完全是個笑話，雜誌搏眼球而已，《時代周刊》這是要亡啊，和《新聞周刊》一樣。太糟糕的名單。
不過這一次，被選上年度人物了，他的態度又180度大轉彎。他在7日接受NBC採訪時說：
"It means a lot, especially me growing up reading Time Magazine, and you know, it's a very important magazine, and I've been lucky enough to be on the cover many times this year."
