所謂「飛特族」，實際上是Freeter的音譯，是英文「自由」（free）與德文「勞工」（arbeiter）的組合字。是指年齡在15至34歲之間，沒有固定職業、從事非全日臨時性工作的年輕人。「飛特族」往往只在需要錢的時候去掙錢，從事的是一些彈性很大的短期工作。錢掙夠了，就休息，或出門旅遊，或在家賦閒。Freeter代表的是一種自由的工作方式。
