老人與海，兩者都代表著浩瀚、無垠和力量。有一種世俗的說法，處世之中寧肯得罪老人而勿惹惱小孩；工作之中鍾愛年輕之人而擱置工作年久之人。此法膚淺，欠妥。這只是以功利的眼光看到了光亮，卻忽視了真正的光源。老人是光源，孩子是閃爍之中的光芒。他給孩子傳遞了夢想、遠方和力量。這在海明威的《老人與海》原著和改編的電影之中都得到了很好的詮釋。
老人的夢

Once an airplane droned overhead on its way to Miami.
大海之中的歌者、舞者
大海之中的是魚嗎？海中魚兒各異，但平臺不同，表現各異。金槍魚和沙丁是餌料，卻也是陽光下的歌者。海豚、飛魚和軍艦鳥是舞者，是藍天、白雲和大海之間的舞者。一條船，一個漁夫，由淺入深的大海，由小到大的魚兒，拉開了一段旅程。金槍、沙丁是馬林魚的誘餌，馬林又是鯊魚的誘餌，這段旅程既驚險又耐人尋味。

開啟徵塵，就有離別，就有戰鬥。電影永遠不會完全挖掘出小說中所有的寓意。小說中孩子對老人流露出的愛，穿越大海，閃爍著熾熱的光芒：
你上哪兒去洗呢？孩子想。村裡取水的地方要隔兩條街，在走大路的坡上。我該幫他取點水，孩子想，再帶塊肥皂和一條新毛巾來。我為什麼這樣粗心大意？我該弄件襯衫和一件茄克衫來讓他過冬，再還弄雙什麼鞋子和一條毯子來。
Where did you wash? the boy thought. The village water supply was two streets down the road. I must have water here for him, the boy thought, and soap and a good towel.Why am I so thoughtless? I must get him another shirt and a jacket for the winter and some sort of shoes and another blanket.
這種款款地溫暖不僅在人類，在魚兒之間也蕩漾著：
