英語裡有不少成語和俗語都是和人體各個部分的名稱相聯繫的，有的和頭，有的和眼睛、鼻子、手和腳有關的。今天我們再講兩個和脖子有關的俗語。Pain這個字大家都知道是痛的意思。Neck是指脖子。但是，pain in the neck並不是脖子痛的意思，pain in the neck是說某人很討厭。這個俗語非常普遍，你每天都可以聽到美國人這麼說："He's a real pain in the neck." 這就是說："那個人真討厭。"下面這個例子是一個飯館的老闆在說某個顧客："I want to run and hide every time I see that woman come into my place. Better do it tonight, or you can't use the car this weekend.""兒子，我並不想讓你討厭，但是我已經提醒你幾十次了，要你把房間整理乾淨。你還是今天晚上把房間打掃乾淨的好，否則，這個周末你就別想用汽車。"下面我們要介紹的一個和neck有關的習慣用語是neck and neck。Neck and neck是指比賽進行得很激烈，競爭雙方不相上下。Neck and neck這個說法原先是來自比賽，如賽跑、賽馬等。就拿賽馬來說吧，有的時候兩匹馬齊頭並進，很難分辨出那匹馬在前頭，那一匹在後頭。在有的情況下，一匹馬由於它的脖子比另一匹馬先到終點而獲勝，還有的時候甚至由於它的頭，或它的鼻子先到而成了冠軍。但是，neck and neck現在也經常用在別的競爭方面，下面這個例子就能說明這一點：Right now, only a week from the election, the republicans and the democrats are running neck to neck and none of the experts can predict which party will win.現在離開選舉只有一個星期了，但是，共和黨和民主黨在競選方面仍然不分上下，沒有一個專家能預測到底哪個黨會在競選中獲勝。Neck and neck有時還可以用在其他場合，就拿我們廣播的這課美國習慣用語來做例子吧：I'm running neck and neck with the clock to see if I can finish on time.這次節目的時間已經很緊了，我正在加緊播送，不知能不能在限定時間內播完這次節目。在這次美國習慣用語裡，我們講了兩個和neck這個字有關的習慣用語，其中之一是pain in the neck。Pain in the neck是指某人非常討厭的意思。這是美國非常普遍的一個俗語。我們今天介紹的另一個和 neck這個字有關的習慣用語是neck and neck。Neck and neck 是指比賽雙方齊頭並進，競爭十分緊張，不分上下。
