:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::Rest is possible even in the midst of your greatest struggles. Here’s how. Is it possible to find rest in the middle of a stressful situation? King David lived a life full of incredible ups and downs including battles, betrayals and running for his life from his enemies. Though he faced one crisis after another, he somehow managed to find rest. Not the kind of rest where you are laying on the sofa vegging out. This is a different kind of rest, a rest for the soul. Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down— this leaning wall, this tottering fence? Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.
How do you take time to find rest for your soul? Have you ever considered why rest is so important?
Working harder, getting weakerWhen talking with some friends about the importance of rest, my friend Janet shared with us about when she finally discovered the power rest had in her life. In my stressful and fast-paced job, I told myself, 「If I do more, things will get better and I』ll be successful. If I just work harder and faster, I』ll finally get a break.」 Without being aware of it, I was heading into a dangerous place of self-reliance and exhaustion. Then I realized that the more I depended on myself, the less I was asking for my Heavenly Father’s help which was leading to a self-centered way of life. Having this wrong way of thinking in that difficult time caused me to physically and spiritually become weaker and weaker. Finally I realized that what I was doing wasn’t working like I expected. I became trapped in a work cycle where there was no living water. Finally I forced myself to stop and I started to pray. I also asked others for help. I humbled myself and gave myself the space to rest and I allowed God’s living water in. In this moment I found an inner power that came through rest. There is purpose in rest. To rest is not just to relax, but to regain strength. When we rest, we recharge our batteries which enables us to continue the work the Lord has put in our hands to do. From the beginning of creation, rest was placed in the rhythms of life. Work and rest, work and rest. God modeled this cycle for us as he worked for six days to create the world and then on the seventh day, He rested. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
Genesis 2:2-3 NIV
Resting in the busy season, are you crazy? I can’t do that! We can be tempted to work non-stop when the pressure is the highest. Maybe you are a part of a huge project at work and you can hardly take a break for dinner. For parents with small children, there seems to be not enough hours in the day to get everything done. How would it be possible to rest in times like this? But God commanded His people to rest, even in the busiest seasons of life. 「Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.」
Exodus 34:21 NIV「
34:21Resting is not just taking a break but is being refreshed and relinquishing the work to God’s care. The Israelites could have easily said, 「We can’t rest now, Lord! The harvest is just coming in, if we don’t harvest now, we will lose the crop!」 But by commanding them to rest, God gave them two gifts: 1. Time to regain strength and 2. An opportunity to depend on the Lord for the work to get done. When Janet discovered that rest actually gave her the strength she needed plus that it brought a humble and healthy reliance on God and others, she experienced an inner power she did not previously have. Stay in the presence of the Lord and find restWhen God led the people Israel, one of the promises He made to Moses was that He would go with them and they would have rest. The Lord replied, 「My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.」
Exodus 33:14 NIV
33:14Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
Psalms 91:1 NIV
91:1When you daily meet with God through prayer, Bible study and worship, you will find rest for your soul no matter what high stress environment you are in. There is an inner rest that God gives when you trust in His protection and guidance. Seek the Lord and you will be given restLife during the time of the Old Testament could be brutal. The kings who reigned in Judah and Israel faced war after war with enemies on all sides. Whenever they sought the Lord in their distress, they would find peace and rest. All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the Lord gave them rest on every side.
2 Chronicles 15:15 NIV
15:15Rest did not depend on the enemies around them (for there always seemed to be enemies!) but rest came when they sought the Lord. Are you seeking God for help and direction or are you pushing harder to find your own way and depending on yourself to try to work harder and faster? Come to Jesus, give Him your burden and He will give rest for your soul來到耶穌這裡,把你的重擔交付給祂,祂會使你心裡得安息Jesus repeated again the prescription for rest that God gave in the Old Testament and He added a key action. Not only can we come to Jesus, but we can and should give Him our burdens. 「Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.」
Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
28:28-30A yoke was used on a farm to link two oxen together. Standing next to each other, the yoke is placed on both of the oxen’s shoulders. With the yoke they are able to work together to pull the plow behind them. When you lay your burdens at the feet of Jesus, He will take up your hard work. And then He will give you His yoke which is easy, and you will work together, side by side. You are no longer alone, but your Savior Jesus is pulling with you, and you will find rest for your soul.
